Brockport Upsets No. 10 Stevenson in Overtime

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Brockport scored three unanswered goals, including the game-winning goal with 1:02 remaining in overtime, as the 10th-ranked Stevenson men's ice hockey team dropped its second straight contest, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

  • Neither team found the back of the net in the opening frame with the Mustangs (10-3-0) holding a 9-8 advantage in shots.
  • The Golden Eagles (9-6-0) had the first power play opportunity of the contest at the 7:08 mark but saw their lone shot stopped by freshman Ryan Kenny.
  • Stevenson had its first man advantage with 7:23 remaining but could not convert.
  • Junior Carl Lyden saw his shot hit off the left post before the rebound attempt by classmate Houston Wilson was saved by Matt Schneider.
  • Brockport had four blocked shots in the period while both team's won nine face-offs.

  • Just 1:07 into the period, the Mustangs got on the board as senior Dominic Brenza netted his third goal of the season.
  • Junior Matt Cappucci played the puck down low before Lyden was able to get the puck off the boards to Brenza.
  • Stevenson went back on the power play just 1:22 after scoring but Schneider made one stop while the Brockport defense blocked two shots.
  • The Golden Eagles had a pair of power play opportunities before the midway point of the period and scored just two seconds after the second power play expired to level the game at 1-1.
  • With 15.8 seconds remaining in the period, senior Christian Ripley regained the Mustangs lead with his sixth goal on the year.
  • Brenza sent a backhanded pass through the center that found the stick of Ripley before sending it up to junior Aaron Murray. Murray's shot was blocked but Ripley buried the rebound.

  • The Mustangs pushed their lead to 3-1 at the 6:41 mark of the period as Lyden sent a wrister over the stick side of Schneider after Murray took the puck from the defensive zone through the neutral zone.
  • Just 14 seconds later, Stevenson was whistled for a penalty before going down two players 49 seconds after the first penalty.
  • The Golden Eagles converted on the five-on-three power play with 51 seconds remaining in the second power play.
  • Brockport tied the game with 2:56 remaining in regulation as Ryan Romeo scored an unassisted goal after sending a wrister through traffic and past Kenny following a poor clear attempt by Stevenson.

  • The Golden Eagles found the back of the net with 1:02 remaining in the extra frame, scoring on a rush.
  • Brockport held a 3-1 advantage in shots in the overtime period.

  • Brockport outshot Stevenson, 33-24.
  • The Mustangs were 0-for-4 on the power play and 7-for-8 on the penalty kill.
  • It is the first back-to-back losses for Stevenson this season.
  • With the win, Brockport leveled the series at 2-2, with the road team winning all four contests.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Friday, January 17 when the Mustangs travel to Lebanon Valley for a UCHC and MAC contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
  • The Mustangs are back home on Friday, January 24 for a non-conference contest versus Fredonia. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
