Mustangs Lock Up No. 1 Seed With Win at Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. - The Stevenson University men's lacrosse team wrapped up the top seed in the upcoming MAC Commonwealth Championship with a 17-6 win at Messiah College Wednesday evening.  The Mustangs broke the game open with nine goals in the third quarter.

  • Jacob Tatum scored the first two goals of the game for Stevenson (9-7, 7-0 MAC Commonwealth) at 13:10 and 12:04.
  • The Falcons (9-7, 6-2) got a goal back with 2:14 remaining in the quarter.
  • Gray McKee registered an unassisted tally with just under a minute left in the first to give the guests a 3-1 lead after 15 minutes.

  • Messiah scored 1:17 into the second to pull within a goal.
  • Ethan Christensen scored 1:29 later on a feed from McKee.
  • McKee recorded his second goal of the game with 5:21 left before halftime.
  • Tatum scored with 4:47 left with Cam Leydig assisting.
  • Liam Lilienthal scored his second goal of the quarter for Messiah with 2:24 to go.
  • JT Thelen entered the scoring column with his unassisted goal at the 1:39 mark.
  • The Falcons scored with 48 seconds left to make the score 7-4 at intermission.

  • Christensen kicked off Stevenson outscoring the Falcons 9-0 in the third with his goal two minutes in.
  • The Mustangs scored three goals in a 52-second span, with Josh Brannan kicking off the run at 11:20.
  • Just 11 seconds later, Al Falco scored, followed by a Christensen tally at 10:28.
  • McKee scored at the 9:11 mark, followed by a Thelen goal on a pass from Christensen with 8:53 left that made it 13-4.
  • Tatum scored back-to-back at 3:27 and 2:56.
  • Thelen closed out the third quarter scoring, with Charlie Costin assisting, with 2:14 on the clock.

  • Messiah snapped a scoring drought of 17:15 with a goal with 13:33 left to play.
  • Shane Ford scored the lone Mustang goal of the fourth with 8:49 on the clock.
  • The Falcons added a goal just before the final buzzer to account for the final.

  • Stevenson outshot Messiah 43-27.
  • Tatum led the Mustangs with five goals.  He has recorded multiple goals in three of the last four games.
  • Three players scored three goals for Stevenson, with Christensen posting three goals and two assists.
  • McKee registered three goals and an assist, while Thelen also had three goals.
  • Thelen is now five goals shy of the program record of 181 held by Richie Ford.
  • Leydig finished with two assists.
  • Dominic DeFazio led the defense with three caused turnovers, while Jacob Magaw and Dylan Harris each had two.
  • Shiloh Shassian won 18-26 faceoffs and picked up six ground balls.
  • Christensen also had six ground balls, with Harris picking up five and DeFazio four.
  • Marc Poust went the first 55-plus minutes in goal and made five saves.  Sam Ross, seeing his first action since March 19, had a save the rest of the way.
  • Stevenson is the No. 1 seed in the MAC Commonwealth Championship for the seventh straight season.

  • Stevenson wraps up the regular season Saturday, April 27, traveling to Arcadia for a 1 pm MAC Commonwealth contest.
