Mustangs Drop Hard Fought Five Set Title Match To Arcadia

GLENSIDE, Pa. - The third-ranked and second-seeded Stevenson University men's volleyball team fell behind early in every set except for the fifth and while rallying back on two separate occasions trailing 1-0 and 2-1 to level the scores at 1-1 and 2-2.  However, the Mustangs dropped a tightly contest final set 15-13 to fall to the host and top-seeded Arcadia University Knights by a final of 3-2 in the Middle Atlantic Conference championship match on Saturday night at Alumni Gymnasium.  Set scores were 25-22, 19-25, 25-22, 24-26, and 15-13.  

  • The teams split the first four points before back to back kills by Jason Manley and a solo for Dan Paraskevov gave the hosts a 5-2 lead.
  • Stevenson (30-4) stopped the run for a second on a kill for junior Kyle Boskobefore Manley answered back to keep the edge at three 6-3.
  • Arcadia (26-10) kept the lead to 9-7 before an attack error and a kill for sophomore Logan Smiley tied things 9-9.
  • After four more ties, the Mustangs got their first lead of the set on an attack error for Quinn Baily to make it 15-14.
  • The Knights rallied back with four of the next five on kills by Manley, Baily, and Paraskevov to go in front 18-16 prompting a visiting timeout.
  • Out of the rest, an attack error and combination block between Anthony Devantier and Robie Moctezuma stretched it to 20-16, however, the away came back with a kill from Smiley to cut it down by two 20-18 leading to a home timeout.
  • A kill for Bosko leveled the score 21-21 but kills by Manley and Baily along with a joint block from Austin Braas and Manley ended the set 25-22. 
  • Arcadia hit an impressive .400 to Stevenson .281.

  • With the score locked 1-1, the Knights got kills from Baily, Braas, and Manley to go ahead 5-1.
  • The Mustangs came storming back thanks to four home errors, a kill by graduate student Christian Taylorand a solo block for Bosko to take a 7-6 lead.
  • Stevenson took five of the ensuing eight points with scores from senior Landon Shorts, Bosko, and Taylor for a 12-9 lead causing an Arcadia timeout.
  • Arcadia came out of the break strong as kills for Baily and Paraskevov pulled the home side within one 13-12.
  • The Mustangs continued to hold no smaller than a two-point lead to 17-15 when a kill for Smiley and assisted block from Taylor and Bosko made it 20-15.
  • A 4-1 run by the Knights with kills coming from Manley and Baily brought it down to 21-19.
  • However, the Mustangs would not be denied with a kill by Shorts followed by a Manley attack error won the frame 25-19.
  • Stevenson rebounded off a rough first set hitting .360 to Arcadia .000.

  • The hosts once again came out of the blocks strong as a combination block from Braas and Paraskevov made it 3-1.
  • A ballhandling error for Devantier trimmed the gap to 3-2, but two scores for Braas and one by Manley led to a Mustangs timeout at 6-2.
  • Kills for Braas, Paraskevov, and Manley helped to extend it to 10-3.
  • Arcadia continued to carry the play with a kill from Moctezuma pushing the advantage to 13-6.
  • The Mustangs worked their way back using a 5-2 run thanks to a pair of Smiley kills to close to within 15-11.
  • A kill by Manley matched the edge of the set 20-13, before a kill by Moctezuma handed the home side their largest lead 21-13.
  • Bosko then provided a solo block to start a string of four in a row and 10-12 to cut the margin to 23-21.
  • Arcadia finished the set at 25-22 on a kill by Paraskevov.  

  • The two sides shared the first six points of the frame, before kills for Manley and Baily made it 9-4.
  • Stevenson came back with a 9-6 stretch with kills for Shorts, Gardner, and Smiley bringing the score to 15-13.
  • Arcadia snagged two of the ensuing three points on a Braas kill and attack miscue by Shorts to regain a three-point cushion 17-14.
  • With the Mustangs down 17-15, the home side received kills by Baily and Moctezuma to extend it to 21-16. 
  • A kill from Reynolds put Shorts on the service line and he answered in a huge way helping the Mustangs to five straight to level the set 21-21.
  • With the score deadlocked at 23-23, a Bosko kill put the guests one-point away from a fifth set, however, a service error for sophomore Aleks Melbardis evened things again.
  • Stevenson would eventually take the set on consecutive Gardner kills 26-24. 

  • Neither team could take control of the set early on as the largest lead was held by Stevenson at 4-2 on a kill by Taylor.
  • With the score knotted at 6-6, Arcadia earned four of the next six points with kills from Manley, Moctezuma, Baily, and Paraskevov to take a 10-8 lead.
  • The continued to lead to 12-10 when kills by Smiley and Shorts leveled the score 12-12.
  • Two points later after errors from both sides, it remained tied 13-13.
  • Unfortunately, for Stevenson a Baily kill and a visitor error ended the set and match 15-13.

  • For the match, the Mustangs outhit the Knights .272 to .258.
  • Arcadia led the battle at the net out-blocking Stevenson nine to five.
  • The hosts also held slim edges in aces (4-3), digs (50-49), and assists (58-54).
  • Smiley led the Mustangs with 17 kills and five digs.
  • Gardner (14), Shorts (13), and Bosko (10) all posted double-digit kills.
  • Taylor handed out 48 assists and also added a pair of blocks.
  • Manley totaled a match-high 20 kills to go along with 11 digs, three assists, and two blocks.
  • Baily, Braas, and Paraskevov each hit double-figures in kills for the Knights.
  • Devantier also racked up 48 helpers.

  • Stevenson will now have to wait until this coming Monday, April 15 to see if they will earn an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament which will begin next weekend.  Stay tuned to gomustangsports.com and all social media platforms for updates as they become available.
