No. 6 Stevenson Sweeps Tri-Match, Extends Win Streak to 12

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The sixth-ranked Stevenson University men's volleyball team swept both ends of a tri-match hosted by Wilkes University Saturday to extend its win streak to 12.  The Mustangs prevailed 3-0 in a Middle Atlantic Conference match against the host Colonels, then held off Penn State Behrend 3-2 in non-conference action in the second match of the day.

  • Set scores were 25-17, 25-16, 25-13.
  • Stevenson (24-3, 9-1 MAC) jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the opening set following a block by Landon Shorts.
  • Up 19-14, the Mustangs rattled off four straight points and a Shorts service ace made it 23-14.
  • Wilkes (9-12, 3-7 MAC) was within 6-5 in the second set when Stevenson registered six straight points to take control.
  • In the third set, the guests again took control with a 6-0 run that made it 11-4.  The run featured four service aces by Billy Russo.
  • A Nathan Bosse kill ended the match.
  • Garrett Weigel led the Mustangs with eight kills, while Bosse, Kyle Bosko and Tanner Stauffer each had six.
  • Weigel also had five block assists.
  • Mason Scott had a team-high nine digs.
  • Aleks Melbardis handed out 30 assists as the Mustangs hit .316 as a team, incuding .474 in the final set.
  • Stevenson held Wilkes to .029 hitting.

  • Set scores were 25-21, 21-25, 25-14, 22-25, 15-9.
  • Stevenson scored the final four points of the first set, taking advantage of a service error and three attack errors by Penn State Behrend (12-8).
  • The Lions turned the tables in the second set, scoring four of the final five points.
  • The Mustangs hit .350 in the third set, while holding Penn State Behrend to .050 hitting.
  • Stevenson found itself in a 5-0 hole early in the fourth before rallying to tie the set 8-8.
  • The fourth featured 11 ties and Stevenson trailed 23-22 before the Lions had the final two points to force a deciding set.
  • The Mustangs used a 7-1 run to take control of the fifth, with a Christian Taylor service ace making it 9-3.
  • Back-to-back kills by Logan Smiley and Shorts closed out the match.
  • Stevenson hit .500 in the fifth and .319 for the match while Penn State Behrend hit .212.
  • Shorts registered 19 kills, six service aces, five digs and two block assists. He hit .417 for the match.
  • Smiley recorded 12 kills, seven digs and four aces.
  • Bosko and Jason Gardner each had eight kills.
  • Taylor handed out 45 assists, while Derek Tangorra had a team-high 11 digs.

  • Stevenson's 12-match win streak is the longest in program history, surpassing a 10-match win streak from last season.
  • The win streak is also currently the longest in Division III.  Carthage, who has an 11-match win streak, faces Loras later Saturday.
  • The Mustangs improved to 6-1 in five-set matches this season and have won the last six.
  • Stevenson finished playing four matches in a 24-hour span, as it downed Vassar and Marymount in a tri-match Friday evening.
  • Shorts' 19 kills against Penn State Behrend were his 15th double-digit kill effort of the season.

  • Stevenson is back in action Wednesday night when it travels to Messiah for a 7 pm MAC contest.
  • The Mustangs return home Wednesday, April 3 when they host Alvernia at 7 pm at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
