No. 6 Mustangs Get Revenge On No. 13 Arcadia And Sweep Misericordia

GLENSIDE, Pa. - The sixth-ranked Stevenson men's volleyball team avenged their earlier loss to No. 13 Arcadia University by defeating them in four sets as well as sweeping Misericordia University in a Middle Atlantic Conference tri-match on Saturday afternoon hosted by Arcadia University.

  • Set scores were 25-20, 20-25, 25-22 and 26-24.
  • Stevenson (19-3, 7-1 MAC) came out of the gate strong with two aces from senior Landon Shorts and a kill by classmate Jason Gardner gave them a 5-1 lead.
  • Over the next five points scores off the hands of graduate student, Christian Taylor and Gardner along with three Knights miscues kept the guests ahead 10-5.
  • Arcadia (18-5, 7-1) used a 5-2 push getting just one offensive score off the arm of Austin Braas to pull the score to 12-10.
  • Over the ensuing 14 points, the teams exchanged scoring two at a time with the Mustangs picking up their scores from junior Kye Bosko, sophomore Logan Smileyand Gardner to stretch their advantage to 20-16.
  • The Knights cut the deficit to 22-19 but kills by sophomore Nate Reynolds and Gardner closed the frame 25-20.
  • With the score tied 11-11, a kill for Braas and ace by Quinn Baily sparked an 8-2 home run to take a 19-13 lead.
  • Stevenson closed the gap to 23-19 on a ballhandling error for Anthony Devantier, however, Baily would deliver a kill and a visiting service error even things at a set apiece with a 25-20 win for the hosts.
  • Kills for Reynolds, Bosko, and Shorts aided by assisted blocks from Smiley and Reynolds as well as one for Bosko and Gardner staked the Mustangs to an 11-6 edge to start the third.
  • Arcadia rallied back with scores by Baily, Braas, Jason Manley, and Jarod Pichler to grab a slim 14-13 advantage.
  • The set would be tied six more times going all the way to 19-19, before kills for Gardner, Taylor, Smiley, and Shorts would help the Mustangs outscore the Knights 6-3 down the stretch for a 25-22 win.
  • To begin the fourth again it was Stevenson who got off to the fast start using scores from Reynolds, Gardner, and Bosko to take a 6-3 edge.
  • The Knights used an 11-8 charge capped by a kill for Baily to draw level at 14-14.
  • Both sides continued to exchange scores over the next dozen points to remain deadlocked 20-20.
  • Then with the score 21-21 a service error by Smiley and kill for Baily put Arcadia up 23-21.
  • However, the Mustangs used a 5-1 gallop with a kill for Shorts and an assisted block between Gardner and Reynolds punctuated the set and match 26-24.
  • Stevenson hit .236 as a team to Arcaida .117.
  • The teams were even in digs with 36 each.
  • The Mustangs held a small edge in aces 4-2.
  • Shorts had 14 kills, seven digs, and two aces.
  • Gardner added 11 kills, seven digs, and two blocks.
  • Taylor dished out 43 assists.
  • Manley, Baily, and Braas all posted double-digit kills for the Knights.

  • Set scores were 25-16, 25-17, and 25-18.
  • Stevenson (20-3, 8-1 MAC) started the match on fire with kills for sophomore Garrett WeigelReynolds, Bosko, Smiley, and Shorts helping them storm out to a 15-3 lead.
  • Misericordia (14-11, 4-1 MAC) earned points from Brian Ross, Matt Lavin, Caleb Bauder and Billy Murphy to score seven of the next eleven to get within 19-10. 
  • Kills off the arms of Smiley, Bosko, and Weigel made it 22-11, before the Cougars got the following four to trim the margin to 22-15.
  • Two Misericordia miscues and a Shorts kill ended the first 25-16.
  • After trailing 2-0, the Mustangs came rampaging back with a pair of kills for junior Nathan Bosseand a kill each for Weigel, Reynolds, and Smiley staked them in front 10-3.
  • Kills for Dylan Sellitti, Bauder, and Miller kept the Cougars close at 17-14.
  • Stevenson then took control of the frame scoring the next five points without recording a kill just blocks from Reynolds and Smiley opening it up to 22-14.
  • Each team scored three more times, but that was all it took for the Mustangs as a kill for Shorts made it 25-17.
  • In the third, neither team could establish dominance early as they were deadlocked all the way out to 12-12.
  • A kill each by sophomore Aleks Melbardis and Weigel helped a 5-0 Mustangs run to establish a 17-12 lead.
  • The Cougars stayed an arm's length away as a service error from Melbardis made it 20-16.
  • An assisted block between Bosse and Weigel along with kills for Smiley, Bosse, and Bosko ended the set and match 25-18.
  • Stevenson posted a .371 attack percentage while holding Misericordia to a -.027.
  • The Mustangs totaled 16 blocks to the Cougars zero.
  • Weigel led Stevenson with seven kills, four digs, and a block.
  • Smiley, Shorts, Bosse, and Bosko combined for 22 kills, 11 digs, and ten blocks.
  • Melbardis handed out 28 helpers.
  • Ross, Bauder, and Lavin led the Cougars with four kills each.

  • The two wins today stretch the Mustangs winning streak to eight in a row.
  • The matchup against Arcadia was the first against a ranked team since facing Arcadia on February 16.  Stevenson is 8-2 against teams that are either currently ranked or have received votes.  
  • In the match against Misericordia, Stevenson held the Cougars to a .000 hitting percentage in the first and a -.174 in the second.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Friday, March 22 when they travel to Arlington, Virginia for a non-conference tri-match against Vassar College and the host Marymount University.  Mustangs and Vassar will begin at 3pm, with the contest against the Saints slated for 5pm.
