Big Fourth Moves No. 19 Hornets Past Stevenson.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - No. 19 Lynchburg rallied from an 8-4 deficit early in the third quarter to move past No. 20 Stevenson 11-9 in non-conference men's lacrosse in the first round of the Mustang Classic Friday night.

  • Kevin Rogers scored a minute into the game to give the Hornets (4-3) an early lead.
  • Stevenson's (1-4) Seth Thornton won the ensuing faceoff and found Will Smith eight seconds later to tie the game 1-1.
  • Freshman Cam Leydig scored with 22 seconds remaining in the frame to give the hosts a 2-1 lead after 15 minutes.
    Lynchburg held a slight 15-13 lead in shots in the first frame, while Stevenson won all four faceoffs in the period.

  • Moments after a big save by Sam Ross, Lynchburg scored to tie the game 2-2 with 9:12 left before halftime.
  • At the 8:00 mark, Gray McKee intercepted a Hornet clear attempt and found JT Thelen down low as the Mustangs reclaimed the lead.
  • After a timeout, Leydig extended the lead to 4-2 with 5:41 remaining.  He then added his third goal of the game 2:04 later to increase the lead to three.
  • Thelen found the upper left corner with 2:38 left in the half for his second goal of the night.

  • Lynchburg cut the lead to 8-6 1:37 into the quarter on a Colin Dean goal.
  • Lombardo struck again at 8:32, then Dean tied the contest 8-8 at the 4:41 mark.
  • Stevenson reclaimed the lead, 9-8, with 3:40 left as Ethan Christensen scored his first goal of the game.
  • Rivington Lambert registered his first goal of the season at 2:10 to knot the game 9-9.
  • After the Hornets won the faceoff, Trammel Robinson gave Lynchburg its first lead since 1-0 with 1:32 left.
  • The guests closed out the scoring with an empty net goal with 23 seconds on the clock.

  • Lynchburg outshot Stevenson 44-40.
  • The Mustangs won 18-of-24 faceoffs and picked up 41 ground balls to Lynchburg's 28.
