Thelen Reaches 200 Points as Fast Start Moves Mustangs Past No. 9 Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio - Senior JT Thelen totaled five goals and an assist and recorded the 200th point of his career as Stevenson University got off to a quick start and downed ninth-ranked Denison 13-6 in non-conference men's lacrosse Saturday afternoon.

  • Stevenson (1-1) got on the board on a man-up goal at the 11:54 mark on a goal by Will Smith. 
  • Thelen scored his first goal of the game at 10:32 then scored again at the 9:34 mark.
  • Ethan Christensen scored off a feed by Smith to make it 4-0 at the 8:56 mark, then a goal by Lewis Anania with 7:42 remaining in the frame made it 5-0.  Thelen assisted on Anania's goal.
  • Jacob Tatum scored at 3:56, on another Smith helper, to up the guests' lead to 6-0.
  • Spencer Butler got Denison (1-1) on the board with 10 seconds left in the quarter.

  • The Mustangs killed off a one-minute man-up situation by the Big Red after an unnecessary roughness penalty at 9:14, including a save by Sam Ross at the 8:38 mark.
  • Denison converted on a man-up opportunity on a Butler goal with 4:46 left before halftime.
  • Stevenson had two man-up chances in the final 1:51, and after six straight shots by the Mustangs, Gray McKee scored with 13 seconds left for his first goal of the game.
  • The visitors entered the locker room ahead 7-2.

  • Thelen extended the lead to 8-2 at the 9:55 mark, with Cam Leydig assisting on the tally.
  • Tatim notched his second goal of the game with just under seven minutes left to increase Stevenson's lead to 9-2.
  • Denison got goals at 5:58 and 1:22 to pull within five, 9-4, heading into the final quarter.

  • Thelen scored the first two goals of the fourth, posting an unassisted tally at 11:30 and a man-up goal with 9:22 left.
  • McKee's second man-up goal of the afternoon with 6:33 left pushed the Mustang lead to eight.
  • Danny Buckwalter scored with 5:33 left to close out Stevenson's scoring.

  • Stevenson outshot Denison 52-41.
  • Thelen became the seventh player in Stevenson men's lacrosse history with 200 career points.
  • Tatum and McKee each notched two goals, while Smith finished with two goals and two assists.
  • Christensen posted a goal and an assist and four ground balls, with Buckwalter and Anania each finishing with single tallies.
  • Dominic DeFazio totaled four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Seth Thornton finished 11-22 on faceoffs on the day and posted six ground balls.
  • Ross, making his first start of the season in goal, turned aside 15 of the 21 shots on cage he faced.
  • The Mustangs finished 4-7 in man-up situations for the contest.
  • Stevenson held Denison to its fewest goals since the Big Red scored 11 in an 11-5 loss to Washington and Lee to open the 2015 season.
  • The win was Stevenson's first over a ranked opponent on the road since downing No. 6 Gettysburg 11-6 in 2017.

  • Stevenson returns to action next Saturday when it travels to sixth-ranked Gettysburg for a 1 pm contest.
  • The Mustangs return home on Saturday, March 9, hosting No. 2 Salisbury in a 7 pm tilt at Mustang Stadium.
