OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's lacrosse sophomore Carly Bowes netted four goals as the Mustangs scored the final two goals of the game in a 12-11 non-conference victory versus Randolph-Macon Saturday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.
The win was the third consecutive for the Mustangs (1-3) in the series, after winning back-to-back games in 2008 and 2009, and ties the all-time series at 3-3.
The Yellow Jackets (1-2) scored just 52 seconds into the contest on a free-position goal but Stevenson responded eight seconds later as senior Jamie Bittner was the ensuing draw control and scored her first goal of the season. After the visitors took a 2-1 advantage, the Mustangs scored four straight, including the first goal of the season by sophomore Sarah Roerty.
Leading by two at halftime, the hosts scored back-to-back goals to start the second half as senior Hana Tankersley scored her first goal of the season before Bowes scored her third of the game. It is the fourth time that Bowes has netted at least three goals in a game and second this season.
Randolph-Macon got within one after scoring four of the next five goals but Bowes scored her fourth on a free-position shot to give the Mustangs a two-goal edge with 13:44 remaining.
Capped by back-to-back goals by Alicia Hsieh, her sixth and seventh goals of the game, the Yellow Jackets took a one-goal lead with 4:50 remaining. But Stevenson had an answer as sophomore Kiely Bunce tied the game on an assist from freshman Lindsay Seipp before sophomore Mallory Davila netted the game-winner on a free-position shot with 2:38 remaining.
Bittner finished with five caused turnovers and three ground balls while Roerty totaled five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Sophomore Mack Ferguson totaled five saves.
The Mustangs held a slight edge in shots, 23-22 while the Yellow Jackets held a 16-9 advantage in draw controls. The hosts were 5-for-6 on free-position shots and collected 20 ground balls.
Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday, March 7 when the Mustangs travel to Washington (Md.) for a non-conference contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
