OWINGS MILLS, Md. – A total of 17 different players scored as the Stevenson University men's lacrosse team registered a 32-7 MAC Commonwealth victory over Alvernia University Tuesday night at Mustang Stadium.
The Mustangs (2-5, 1-0 MAC Commonwealth) established a school record for goals in a game, surpassing the previous mark of 30 set in 2008 against Hood and tied in 2014 against Alvernia. It also marks the highest single-game total in Division III this season.
Eight players scored their first career goals in the victory, led by junior Matt Benincasa's three goals. Adding single tallies were senior Tom Brown, sophomores Matt Bowman, Scott Mitchell and Justin Trapani and freshmen Lewis Anania, Luke Fisher and Gray King.
Sophomore Ethan Christensen and freshmen Jacob Tatum led the Mustangs with four goals and an assist apiece while sophomore Collin Tucker added three goals. Junior Chris Hammerquist posted two goals and two assists, with senior Harrison Faecher, junior Gray McKee and freshman John Harrington each adding two goals. Junior JT Thelen had a goal and five assists, with all five helpers coming in the first quarter. Senior Kyle Karsian had a goal and an assist.
The Golden Wolves (0-7, 0-1 MAC Commonwealth) were led by Jarret Abernathy and Tyler McDonnell with three goals apiece.
Stevenson led 11-0 after one quarter and held a 21-1 lead at halftime.
The Mustangs outshot the Golden Wolves 76-30 and won 36-of-41 faceoffs. Five Stevenson goalies saw action, with Sam Ross, Marc Poust and Tyler Steinberg each playing a quarter before Shane Silk and Damian Randall split the final frame.
Sophomore Justin Burnette won 14-of-15 faceoffs and picked up 10 ground balls while Dan Halla was 13-13 and had eight ground balls. Senior Austin Howard had two of Stevenson's 10 caused turnovers.
Stevenson returns to action Saturday, March 31, when it travels to Albright College for a 1:00 MAC Commonwealth contest.
