Mustangs Topple No. 3 Cabrini 14-10

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Junior JT Thelen finished with five goals and an assist as Stevenson University knocked off No. 3 Cabrini University 14-10 in non-conference men's lacrosse Friday night at Mustang Stadium.

Stevenson (1-5), which has faced six nationally-ranked teams to start the season, gave the Cavaliers (6-1) their first loss of the season.  The Mustangs' 14 goals were a season high.

Cabrini, which trailed 10-3 at halftime, pulled within three, 11-8, 48 seconds into the fourth quarter on a goal by Ty Kostack.  Stevenson responded with two goals in a span of 1:10, with senior Harrison Faecher scoring at 13:44, followed by junior Gray McKee's tally at 12:34.  Kostack struck again at the 10:29 mark with an extra-man tally to again make the Mustang lead four.

The Cavaliers pulled within three, 13-10, with 9:01 left as Kevin Lyden scored.  Cabrini held the ball for much of the remaining time, but sophomore goalie Sam Ross kept the guests at bay, making three saves.  Cabrini went a man up with 1:18 left, but on a scramble in front of Cabrini's goal on a Mustang clear attempt, freshman longpole Kevin McCarthy picked up a loose ball and scored a man-down goal with 51 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

Stevenson's first goal came just over a minute into the game as Jacob Tatum picked up a ground ball on a broken clear by Cabrini and scored.  Kostack tied things up at the 12:08 mark, but three straight goals by the hosts put the Mustangs up on a Chris Hammerquist goal with 6:33 left in the first.  Stevenson led 4-2 after one frame.

Holding a 6-3 lead, Stevenson rattled off four goals in a span of just over four minutes to build a seven-goal advantage.  Back-to-back goals by Thelen 17 seconds apart made it 8-3 with 7:21 left in the half.  Faecher scored at 5:42, followed by a goal by senior Kyle Karsian at the 4:29 mark.  Cabrini scored in the final minute to make it 10-4 at intermission.

Cabrini scored the first two goals of the second half to pull within 10-6 with 4:35 left in the third.  A man-up goal by Thelen with just under four minutes left in the third snapped the Mustang scoring drought and made it 11-6, and Stevenson carried an 11-7 lead into the final stanza.

The Cavaliers outshot Stevenson 42-37, including 24-12 over the final 30 minutes, but the Mustangs won 19 of 28 faceoffs and picked up 31 ground balls to Cabrini's 25.

Besides Thelen's six points, Karsian and Faecher each totaled two goals and an assist while McKee finished with a pair of goals.  Tatum finished with a goal and two assists while sophomore Ethan Christensen handed out three assists on the evening.

Ross finished with 12 saves for the Mustangs, with sophomore Justin Burnette taking all 28 faceoffs, winning 19, and picking up seven ground balls.  Senior Austin Howard picked up four ground balls and Thelen three, while Tatum and senior Tom Brown each recorded a pair of caused turnovers.

Kostack led Cabrini with three goals and an assist, while Cavalier goalie Riley White made 10 stops.

Stevenson opens MAC Commonwealth play Tuesday night when it hosts Alvernia University in a 7:00 contest at Mustang Stadium.
