OWINGS MILLS, Md. – No. 4 York (Pa.) College jumped out to a 6-0 lead after one quarter en route to a 20-7 win over No. 19 Stevenson University in non-conference men's lacrosse in the second round of the Mustang Classic Saturday night at Mustang Stadium.
After scoring 2:20 into the game, the Spartans (7-1) scored five goals in a span of 6:15 capped by a Thomas Pfeiffer man-up goal at the 2:06 mark to go up 6-0. The Spartans extended their run to eight straight goals to start the game with tallies at 12:32 and 2:34 of the second quarter. Senior Kyle Karsian got the Mustangs (0-5) on the board with his unassisted score with 2:14 remaining before halftime, but York's Hunter Davis answered 42 seconds later to make it 9-1 at the break.
York scored the first three goals of the third to go up 12-1 before freshman Jacob Tatum recorded a man-up goal at the 7:55 mark. The visitors held a 15-2 lead after three quarters. Freshman John Harrington scored his first collegiate goal 1:05 into the final frame. Tatum scored his second goal of the game at the 10:23 mark, while sophomore Collin Tucker scored his first collegiate goal with 4:55 left. Senior Harrison Faecher closed out the Mustang scoring with a pair of goals in the final 1:51.
The Spartans outshot Stevenson 38-24, with the Mustangs winning 20-of-30 faceoffs, with sophomore Justin Burnette winning 16-of-25 draws. York's Landry Marshall made four saves over the first 50:47 before Jacob Laubner made one save the rest of the way. Sophomore Sam Ross stopped five shots over the first three quarters before giving way to senior Marc Poust, who stopped one shot.
Burnette had five ground balls on the night, while senior Austin Howard added four. Junior Chazz Collison had a pair of caused turnovers.
Stevenson faces its sixth-straight ranked opponent to start the season Tuesday night when it hosts No. 7 Tufts in a 7:00 contest at Mustang Stadium.
