SALISBURY, Md. - The Stevenson men's tennis team opened its spring schedule with an 8-1 defeat to host Salisbury in its match held at the Salisbury Indoor Tennis Center.
Senior Wornden Ly and sophomore Ray McDermott opened up the day with a thrilling 9-7 victory in No. 1 doubles over Salisbury's Kelson Weber and Garrett Malave. The win evens up their doubles record to 2-2 on the season (not counting tournament matches).
In No. 2 doubles, junior Douglas Vaughan and junior Andrew Ryan lost a tough match by an 8-6 score. Andrew Sturniolo and junior Peter Appiah Jr. lost by the same 8-6 score in No. 3 doubles.
Sturniolo took the first set of his No. 2 singles match, but would eventually fall by a 6-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7) score.
Ryan overcame a one-set deficit in his No. 4 match, but would fall in a third set tiebreaker. Junior Douglas Vaughan also took his match to three sets, falling in another tiebreaker, 3-6, 7-6, 1-0.
Ly fell in a tough 7-6 first set in No. 2 singles, and would then drop the second by a 6-3 score.
Stevenson (1-3) will continue play at the Salisbury Indoor Tennis Center when they take on Juniata on Sunday, February 18 starting at 10:00 am.
