Mustangs Pull Out Back and Forth Battle at Lehman

BRONX, N.Y. - In a back-and-forth battle that saw 19 lead changes and six ties, Stevenson closed the game on a 9-2 run to take an 85-82 non-conference men's basketball victory over Lehman College in the first round of Lehman's Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament at The APEX Main Gym Friday evening.

  • Stevenson (9-2) held a 10-6 lead following a tip-in by senior Montaque Wright just over four minutes into the game.
  • Lehman (4-5) used a 7-0 run to take a 13-10 lead, before six straight points by the Mustangs gave the guests their largest lead of the first half, 19-13, at the 12:04 mark on a conventional three-point play by Marlon White, Jr.
  • The Lightning reclaimed the lead on a three-pointer 8:09 before intermission.
  • A layup by Marcus Dentley with just over five minutes left put Stevenson on top 29-28.
  • After the Mustangs took a 38-37 lead on a Wright layup with 1:34 left, Lehman scored five straight to take its largest lead of the opening stanza, 42-38, and led 42-40 at halftime.
  • The lead changed hands eight times in the first half, with three ties.

  • Lehman outscored Stevenson 16-10 over the first six-plus minutes of the second half to open up a 58-50 lead, its largest of the game.
  • The Mustangs scored nine straight points in a span of 2:14 to take a 59-58 lead with 12:27 left on a three by Johnny Rhodes.
  • The lead changed hands four times before a Wright three with just over nine minutes to play gave Stevenson a 69-68 advantage.
  • A pair of free throws by Fred Truss put the Lightning up 80-76 with 3:31 on the clock.
  • Stevenson held the hosts scoreless for over two minutes and scored seven straight to go up 83-80 at the 1:23 mark on a Rhodes layup.
  • A pair of free throws by Mark Terrell 26 seconds earlier gave the Mustangs the lead for good, 81-80.
  • Isaiah Geathers' basket with 20 seconds left pulled the Lightning within one, 83-82.
  • Wright was fouled and sank two free throws with 18.5 seconds left to make it a three-point game.
  • Lehman got a look at a game-tying three, but Stevenson defended the shot well and it clanged off the back rim and the Mustangs grabbed the rebound to seal the win.

  • Stevenson's 9-2 record is its best through 11 games since the 2014-15 season, when the Mustangs also started off 9-2.
  • The Mustangs improved to 4-1 in games decided by five points or less.
  • Stevenson shot 43.8% from the floor, including 9-23 (39%) behind the arc, while Lehman shot 50% from the field and knocked down 10-21 from long range.
  • The guests took 16 more trips to the free throw line, going 20-30, while the Lightning went 12-14 at the charity stripe.
  • The Mustangs outrebounded Lehman 41-28 and held a 17-9 lead in second-chance points.
  • Wright finished with 25 points, five rebounds and four assists.
  • Terrell, playing for the first time after missing the previous two contests, posted a double-double with 21 points and a career-best 10 rebounds.
  • Rhodes tallied nine points, six rebounds and three assists.
  • White finished with 10 points.

  • The Mustangs will face Manhattanville, a 92-78 winner over Old Westbury in Friday's first game, in the championship tilt on Saturday.  Tip-off is slated for 5 pm.
  • Stevenson returns to Owings Mills Gym on Saturday January, 5 when they host John Jay in non-conference action at 2 pm.
