Benitez Scores Twice in Mustangs Setback Versus Manhattanville

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's ice hockey freshman Luke Benitez netted a pair of power play goals but Manhattanville scored two unanswered goals en route to a 3-2 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) victory Friday evening at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

  • Just 16 seconds into the contest, the Mustangs (3-2-0, 2-2-0 UCHC) went on the power play but a pair of shots by sophomore Aaron Murray were blocked.
  • On the hosts second power play attempt, Bentiez found the back of the net on his first shot after a breakaway. With Manhattanville changing, Murray played the puck ahead to Benitez who beat Mac Vail over his glove. Freshman goalkeeper, Riley McVeigh, picked up the secondary assist.
  • Both teams took penalties late in the period, including the Valiants (2-1-2, 2-1-1 UCHC) going back into the box with 1:49 remaining in the period.
  • Stevenson outshot Manhattanville, 6-2 in the period.

  • The middle frame featured a combined 10 penalties and three goals, including two scores by the visitors.
  • At the 13:55 mark, Matt Lippa tied the game at 1-1 on a five-on-three power play, just 18 seconds after the second penalty went in the box.
  • Stevenson scored with 1:35 remaining in the period as Benitez scored a four-on-three power play goal on assists from junior Nick Gray and Murray.
  • With 11 seconds left in the period, Manhattanville responded with a four-on-three power play goal as Eric Berglund found the back of the net.
  • The Mustangs were held to just two shots on net in the period.

  • At the midway mark of the period, Marco Ferraro gave the visitors the lead on the first and only even strength goal of the night.
  • The Mustangs were 0-for-2 on the power play in the period and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
  • With 1:41 left in regulation, McVeigh was pulled in favor for an extra skater but the Mustangs did no get a shot on net. Both Murray and junior Bruce Stachitas came up with a pair of blocked shots to prevent empty net goals.

  • Manhattanville outshot Stevenson, 26-19, marking just the third time the Mustangs have been held to less than 20 shots in program history.
  • The Mustangs were 2-for-8 on the power play while the Valiants were 2-for-9.
  • McVeigh finished with 23 saves in his fourth start.
  • It is the first career multi-point game for Benitez and second for Murray.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, November 17 when the Mustangs host an UCHC contest versus Neumann beginning at 7:00 p.m.
