Caffrey Totals Career-High 48 Saves, Mustangs Fall in Overtime to Brockport

Box Score

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson men's ice hockey senior Jacob Caffrey set a new career-high with 48 saves but Brockport scored the game-tying goal with 13.8 seconds remaining in regulation before scoring the game-winner 3:38 into overtime as the Mustangs dropped a 5-4 non-conference decision Friday evening at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

It was the second time in the last four games the Mustangs (6-5-5) have allowed 50 shots after holding its first 28 opponents in program history to under 50. In both of those games, Stevenson, who has played seven overtime games this season, allowed the game-tying goal in the final minute of the game while facing an extra skater.

The hosts jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening eight minutes of the first period with goals from sophomore Nick Gray and Jake McNamara. Gray scored his third goal of the season and extended his point streak to four games after receiving a centering pass from sophomore Dominic Brenza on the power play. Freshman Carl Lyden was credited with the secondary assist.

It was only the third power play goal the Golden Eagles (7-6-1) have allowed this season as the penalty kill units entered the game ranked first in Division III. It was the fourth consecutive game that Stevenson has netted a power play goal.

Just 1:54 later, McNamara netted his first goal of the season on a blast from the point with assists coming from Gray and freshman Matt Cappucci. It is Gray's third multi-point game in his last four.

Brockport answered with a pair of power play goals on its first two opportunities, scoring just 1:59 apart. The extra-man goals came with 42 and 40 seconds left in the player advantage, respectively. The power play goals were the first the Mustangs have allowed in the last four games.

After the Golden Eagles took a one-goal lead early in the second period, the Mustangs responded late in the period with a pair of goal to take a 4-3 second intermission lead. Lyden found the back of the net after showing patience in front after receiving a pass from Brenza. Brenza extends his point streak to four games and has four multi-assist games this season. His 13 assists is one shy of tying the single season record.

Stevenson then took the lead on a goal from senior Doug Rose, his first in the last seven games. Classmate Jordan Watt played the puck ahead from inside the defensive zone before sophomore Christian Ripley found Rose cutting towards the center of the ice. Watt has a point in back-to-back games after a five-game point drought.

Brockport sent goaltender Jake Moore to the bench for an extra skater with 1:25 left in regulation and after five shots turned away by Caffrey, Connor Hutchins found the back of the net on a rebound in front. In overtime, the Golden Eagles recorded all seven shots with Tim Kielich scoring the winner.

The Mustangs were outshot, 53-38 but won 45 of the 78 face-offs. Both Ripley and freshman Houston Wilson won 12 face-offs. Watt finished with three blocks.

Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, January 13 when the Mustangs host 8th-ranked Geneseo. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
