Smith, Fields Score in Mustangs Double Overtime Loss Versus Hampden-Sydney

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson men's soccer team held two separate leads but it was Hampden-Sydney who came out on top after scoring in the 117th minute to escape with a 3-2 double overtime victory Sunday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.

The Mustangs (1-1) are 2-2-4 since the start of the 2015 season in overtime and fall to 1-3 all-time versus Hampden-Sydney. The Tigers have won both meetings in Owings Mills.

Right after the opening whistle, the hosts went on the offense, creating a scoring chance just 20 seconds into the game. Junior Aleem Mirza fired the first shot on net in the opening minute after a corner kick by senior Eric Dorsey found his feet at the top of the 18-yard box.

The Tigers looked to have a promising attack in the seventh minute as Thomas Carswell got behind the defense and would have been one-on-one with senior goalkeeper Jake Brown but freshman Jevan Leyh quickly recovered and fought Carswell off the ball inside the box.

A free kick from sophomore DR Medtart in the 27th minute from the left edge of the 18-yard box found Smith on the far post. After a missed header, Smith was able to flick the ball with his heel towards the far post for the score.

Less than four minutes later, the Tigers (1-0-1) evened the score as Hunter Weiland put the ball towards net from 33 yards out that slipped through the hands of Brown.

The Mustangs recorded seven shots in the opening period, putting six of them on frame. The visitors were held to just three shots, with all three on net.

It took just 11 seconds for Stevenson to get on the board in the second half, as freshman Jordan Fields controlled a long pass from Medtart before cutting the ball back. Fields was able to get his feet free and rip a shot from just inside the box over the outstretched arms of Ian Connor.

A foul in the box gave the Tigers a penalty kick in the 60th minute, which Ryan Turner converted after hitting a low left-footer towards the right post.

Just over midway through the second half, Hampden-Sydney had a free kick from midfield, which bounced to the feet of Turner but his volley sailed high over the crossbar.

The Tigers thought they had taken their first lead of the game in the 81st minute as a header by Josh McCormack found the back of the net but the assistant referee had his flag up for offside.

After a scramble following a corner kick in overtime, the ball bounced to Smith who was able to get a head to it with Connor out of the net, but he sent it high.

A long kick by James Winkler found the feet of Jacob Mann and with Brown out of the box, Mann was able to score on the open net to give Hampden-Sydney its first win of the season.

The Mustangs held a 19-12 advantage in shots and a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Stevenson returns to action on Friday, September 8 when the Mustangs travel to face Gettysburg in a non-conference contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
