Box Score GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Stevenson University women's volleyball team shook off an opening set loss to down Arcadia University 3-1 in MAC Commonwealth action at Alumni Gymnasium Tuesday evening, giving the Knights their first conference loss. The Mustangs (15-1, 2-0 MAC Commonwealth) won by scores of 21-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-14.
Arcadia (11-5, 3-1 MAC Commonwealth) has drawn attention in the early season, jumping out to a 3-0 start in conference play and defeating nationally-ranked Eastern and taking another ranked foe, Christopher Newport, to four sets. The Mustangs, meanwhile, extended their all-time record in MAC Commonwealth regular season matches to 42-0.
Stevenson trailed 15-10 in the first set before a 6-2 run pulled the Mustangs back within one, 17-16. The Knights led 19-18 before a kill and an ace extended their lead to 21-18. The guests cut the lead to two twice, but Arcadia had the last two points of the set and a Lauren Enfield kill gave Arcadia the early lead.
Arcadia led 14-11 in the second set before five straight points capped by a kill by senior Annika Schwartz put Stevenson up 16-14. The hosts tied the frame 17-17 before a Chelsea Ireland kill and an Arcadia service error put the Mustangs back on top. Arcadia responded with two points of its own to forge the sets' ninth tie, but a Schwartz kill and a Knight attack error made it 21-19. Stevenson had the final three points and a Schwartz ace and an Arcadia attack error tied the match.
The Mustangs never trailed in the third set as they scored the first five points of the set. Arcadia pulled within 9-7 but got no closer as Stevenson led by as many as eight. The fourth set was also all Stevenson as again it never trailed and dashed any hopes of an Arcadia comeback by jumping out to a 15-6 lead.
Schwartz and junior Moriah Savage each led the way with 13 kills, with Schwartz hitting .300 on the evening and adding 12 digs. Savage added three blocks. Sophomore Katie Leftridge added eight kills, while Ireland finished with five kills on .556 hitting and five blocks.
Sophomore Caroline Dangel had 16 assists and 12 digs, while classmate Emily Castro handed out 18 assists and tallied seven digs. Senior Megan Hren had a team-high 15 digs on the night.
Stevenson hit .203 as a club while holding the Knights to .030 hitting. The Mustangs hit .333 in the final frame while Arcadia hit for a negative percentage in the second and fourth sets after hitting at a .216 clip in the opening frame.
Stevenson, which has now won three straight, returns to action Wednesday night with a 7:00 contest at Gallaudet.
