Shorts Sets Single Season Service Ace Record in Win Over Arcadia

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's volleyball sophomore Landon Shorts recorded the single season service ace record as the Mustangs posted a 16-25, 25-21, 25-11, 25-8 non-conference victory over Arcadia Thursday evening at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

The win was third consecutive for the Mustangs (19-10) who have dropped just one set during the stretch. The team also totaled at least 10 service aces for the fifth time this season after recording 11 in the match.

After the hosts to a quick 2-0 lead on back-to-back kills by Shorts and junior Alex Klunk, the Knights (12-18) recorded six consecutive points, getting two blocks by Austin Braas. Arcadia continued its hot start with a 6-1 run midway through the set to taken a seven-point lead.

After getting behind 19-11, the Mustangs were forced to take their second timeout of the set, which sparked a 4-0 run by the hosts. But after an Arcadia timeout, the visitors scored five consecutive points to set up nine set points.

Stevenson hit -.037 in the opening set as the Knights recorded nine combined blocks, including four block assists and a solo block by Braas. Arcadia hit .269 in the set with 12 kills compared to five errors while adding three service aces.

Trailing by as many as four in the second set, the Mustangs rallied to knot the game at 11-11 after a kill by senior Nicholas Gross. After the Knights went back up two, Stevenson used a 5-1 run and three straight kills by Shorts to take a 17-15 advantage.

The hosts turned around a slow start to the second set and hit .269 on 13 kills, seven of them from Shorts. Senior David Santangelo recorded the first service ace for the Mustangs. Arcadia hit .308 in the set but recorded eight service errors.

Stevenson took early control of the third set, jumping out to a 12-4 lead. The Knights would get within seven points before the Mustangs strung together five consecutive points for their largest lead of the set at 19-7.

The Mustangs recorded just seven kills in the third set but finished with six total blocks, including two solo, and three service aces.  Shorts, already the school leader in service aces, set the single season record with his 59th service ace tonight, surpassing his record of 58 he set a season ago.

With two block assists in the set, senior Nate Ellis moved into seventh place in program history with 206 block assists.

Another quick start in the fourth set by the hosts forced Arcadia to call a timeout with the Mustangs leading 10-4 after back-to-back kills by sophomore Jason Gardner and the second service ace by Shorts. Shorts added another service ace out of the timeout before recording a kill.

The Mustangs did not record an attack error in the final set and finished with seven service aces, including two a piece by Shorts, Gross and senior Michael Fehrs.

Shorts finished with 16 kills, marking the 20th time this season he has recorded double digit kills. In 63 career matches, Shorts has finished with at least 10 kills in 39 of them. He also added 10 digs, three service aces and three total blocks.

Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, April 8 when the Mustangs host a tri-match versus Continental Volleyball Conference foe Eastern Mennonite and Penn State Altoona beginning at 2:00 p.m. Prior to the 6:00 p.m. match, the Mustangs will honor its five seniors.
