Appiah Overcomes One-Set Deficit to Give Mustangs a 5-4 Win Over Alvernia

STEVENSON, Md. - With the match tied at four games apiece, sophomore Peter Appiah Jr. overcame a one-set deficit to win his match and give the Stevenson men's tennis team a 5-4 victory over visiting Alvernia. Appiah trailed his No. 4 singles match by one set and was down 5-2 in the second, before winning nine-straight games en route to a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 triumph. 

With the victory, the Mustangs improved to 3-1 in MAC Commonwealth play. 

Earlier in the day, Appiah and junior Mike Richmond won a close match in No. 2 doubles by an 8-6 score.

Senior Bryan Gieselman and junior Wornden Ly won their No. 1 doubles match in thrilling fashion, 9-7. With the victory, Gieselman and Ly are now 9-8 on the season.

Ly would later take his No. 2 singles match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, for his second win of the season. Gieselman dropped a hard-fought match in No. 1 singles, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.

The other victory for the Mustangs came from senior Kevin Slujtner, who took his No. 6 singles match in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-1. 

Stevenson (4-10, 3-1) compete next in a MAC Commonwealth road match against Hood on Tuesday, April 18 at 3:30 pm.
