Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Wade Korvin scored three goals and No. 11 Stevenson University won 15 of 21 faceoffs as the Mustangs defeated sixth-ranked Gettysburg College 11-6 in non-conference men's lacrosse Saturday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium. The Bullets (2-2) reached the NCAA Division III semifinals a season ago.
Stevenson (1-1) also got two goals apiece from junior Kyle Karsian and sophomore JT Thelen, while senior Kyle D'Onofrio had a goal and two assists. Seniors Sean Ohlhaver, Tyler Fuhrman and Jacob Brown each added single goals.
The Mustangs won 15-of-21 faceoffs on the afternoon, with freshman Justin Burnette going 8-11 and senior Nathaniel LeQuang going 7-10 at the X. Senior goalie Ross Dinan finished with eight saves as the Mustangs outshot Gettysburg 49-32.
The two teams were deadlocked 2-2 for most of the second quarter after Fuhrman scored at the 12:25 mark, but with five seconds to go in the first half, Korvin scored his first goal of the afternoon off a feed from junior Lito Flanagan to give the Mustangs a 3-2 lead that they took into the locker room.
The Bullets tied the game on a Sean Fumai goal at the 10:07 mark of the third, before Stevenson took the lead for good on back-to-back goals by Thelen coming 50 seconds apart, the first at 6:52. Korvin gave the guests a 6-3 lead heading into the final frame when he scored on a feed from Thelen with 44 seconds left in the third quarter.
Gettysburg cut the lead to 6-4 59 seconds into the fourth on a Tommy Heller goal, before three straight goals by the Mustangs made it a 9-4 game with 6:58 to play. Karsian scored at the 11:35 mark, then 37 seconds later Korvin added his third goal of the game. D'Onofrio scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season with just under seven minutes left to push the lead to five. Heller scored again with 5:02 to go to make it 9-5, but back-to-back tallies by Brown at 4:13 and Ohlhaver at 2:54 salted the game away.
The hosts took a 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the game on a Blake Gray goal, but Stevenson took advantage of their first man-up opportunity of the game to tie the game on a Karsian goal at the 11-minute mark. The score remained 1-1 after one quarter.
Fumai gave the Bullets a 2-1 lead 35 seconds into the second quarter, but exactly two minutes later Fuhrman scored his first goal of the season to tie the game 2-2.
Stevenson was 1-2 with the man advantage while Gettysburg was 0-3 as the two teams combined for just five penalties. The Mustangs outshot their hosts 32-16 over the final 30 minutes, including 14-6 in the fourth quarter, and were successful on 18-22 clears, while Gettysburg converted 15-of-21 clear attempts. The Bullets had six more turnovers than the guests (25-19).
Junior Dominic DeFazio led Stevenson with a pair of caused turnovers, while Flanagan, playing in his first game of the season, had six ground balls and a caused turnover. Korvin also had four ground balls, while Burnette and D'Onofrio each picked up three as the Mustangs held a 32-27 lead in that category.
Stevenson is idle until its home opener next Saturday night when it welcomes No. 13 Ohio Wesleyan to Mustang Stadium for a 7:00 faceoff.
