SALISBURY, Md. - The Stevenson softball team's offensive woes continued as the Mustangs were held to just one hit on the day as the team dropped a non-conference doubleheader versus Salisbury Wednesday afternoon at the Sea Gull Softball Stadium.
The Mustangs (3-11) have now dropped five straight doubleheaders and have been held to just 3.4 hits a game during that stretch. During the losing streak, the team has been outscored, 59-5.
For the third time this season, Stevenson was held to a season-low three hits in the opening game versus the Sea Gulls (12-12), who exploded for 13 hits. It was also the fifth time this season the team has been shutout in a game.
The Mustangs could do nothing with a leadoff double by sophomore Erin Stephey and she was left stranded on second base after the next three batters flied out. Stevenson left seven runners on base in the game, including two in the second and third innings.
Salisbury used a four-run first inning with all four runs coming with two outs. A triple by Annie Pietanza opened the scoring before Emily Allen cleared the bases with a three-run home run to left field. The biggest inning for the Sea Gulls came in the third when they scored five runs.
After totaling just four errors in the previous six games combined, the Mustangs committed three in the opening game of the doubleheader, which allowed five unearned runs to score.
Junior Jasmyn Ogletree went 1-for-2 in the game while sophomore Kayla Maggio was 1-for-1 with a walk. Stephey finished 1-for-3, recording her third double of the season.
The Mustangs' offense came alive in the first inning of game two, as Stephey hit another leadoff double with a 2-2 count to put the team in scoring position. A single by junior Tiffany McKee put two runners on before a sacrifice fly by senior Naomi Fields scored a run.
Stevenson added another two hits in the second inning to surpass the team's hit total from the previous game. Freshman Morghan Fulton hit a single to right field before senior Nicole Dell hit a double up the right field line to put runners at second and third with one out.
But the next two batters grounded out to the left side. The Mustangs left another seven runners on base in the second game.
After being held to just one hit through the first two innings, the Sea Gulls exploded for five in the third to score four runs, all coming with two outs. Salisbury added three unearned runs in the sixth inning after the leadoff batter reached on an error.
With the bases loaded in the sixth, Caitlin Lake cleared the bases with a double to centerfield.
The Mustangs finished with six hits in the games, including a 2-for-3 performance at the plate by Fulton.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, April 1 when the Mustangs travel to face Lebanon Valley in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
