Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. - The Stevenson softball team was limited to just 12 hits on the day and left a total of 20 runners stranded as the Mustangs fell to Rutgers-Newark, 2-0, and Bates, 5-3, on the opening day of their six-game spring break trip Sunday morning at Hancock Park.
The Mustangs (0-2) fall to 10-18 in their Clermont games dating back to the 2014 season. The team has also dropped its last six season openers, including this year's under first-year head coach Julia Culotta.
In the opener versus the Scarlet Knights (2-1), both sophomore Erin Stephey and junior Tiffany McKee recorded two hits. It is the first career multi-hit game for McKee who entered the season with only 11 career at bats.
Rutgers-Newark recorded all five of its hits through the first three innings as the Scarlet Raiders scored a run in each of the second and third innings. The Mustangs responded in the fourth inning with two runners on and only one out, but could not push a run across.
Freshman Haley Lennon recorded her first career hit, going 1-for-2 with a walk.
Junior Brooke Steinbach threw a career-high six strikeouts through six innings.
In the second game versus the Mules (5-3), the Mustangs scored three runs in the first inning on RBIs by Stephey, senior Naomi Fields and junior Jasmyn Ogletree. Fields hit her first career triple and 11th extra-base hit.
Bates scored a run in the third inning before taking the lead in the fourth on a three-run homer.
Fields finished with two hits in the game while freshman Morghan Fulton recorded her first career hit. Fulton also strukeout two batter through 3.2 innings.
Stevenson returns to action on Monday, March 13 when the Mustangs face Minnesota-Morris and Becker at 12:00 and 6:00 p.m., respectively.
