Box Score HARRISONBURG, Va. - Four different players recorded at least 10 kills but the Stevenson men's volleyball team dropped the final four points of the decisive set in a five-set Continental Volleyball Conference loss at 10th-ranked Eastern Mennonite Wednesday evening.
The Mustangs (7-5, 0-1 CVC), who have dropped three of their last four, fell 23-25, 31-29, 18-25, 30-28, 13-15 for just their third conference loss in the last 14 matches. It is also the third five-set match for the team this season.
After dropping the opening set and down 20-23 in the second, Stevenson scored three straight points to tie the set at 23-23 before erasing a match point against with a kill by senior Michael Fehrs. Fehrs finished with 12 kills to match his season-high.
The Royals erased two set points before sophomore Landon Shorts and senior Kyle Johnson posted back-to-back kills to tie the match at a set a piece. The Mustangs totaled 23 kills in the set for a .410 hitting percentage.
A negative hitting percentage in the third set halted the visitors but Stevenson erased seven match points for Eastern Mennonite in the fourth set to force a fifth and decisive set.
In the final set, the Mustangs fell behind 1-5, but rallied with four straight points to level the set. With the visitors leading 13-11, the Royals answered with back-to-back kills before Stevenson committed back-to-back attack errors.
Shorts finished with a team-high 13 kills while adding 10 digs and two service aces while sophomore Jason Gardner and junior Alex Klunk finished with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Freshman Derek Tangorra recorded a match-high 19 digs.
Stevenson returns to action on Friday, February 10 when the Mustangs face Ramapo and Vassar in Poughkeepsie, New York. The opening match is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
