Mustangs Erase Three-Goal Deficit, But Fall Late in Third Period

Box Score

RYE, N.Y. - Junior Mike Davis recorded his fourth multi-point game in his last four as the Stevenson men's ice hockey team erased a three-goal deficit but Manhattaville scored the game-winning goal with 39 seconds for a 5-4 ECAC West victory Saturday night at Playland Ice Casino.

It was the second straight one-goal loss for the Mustangs (9-11-2, 4-7-1 ECAC West), who had erased deficits in all three of those games. The team finished 2-6-0 on its eight-game road stretch.

The Valiants (12-9-1, 8-3-0 ECAC West) scored three times in the opening period, including two goals by Adam Platt. Platt has totaled five goals in two games versus Stevenson after recording in the first meeting between these two teams.

Manhattanville also scored a power-play goal in the first period, marking the sixth time in the last seven games Stevenson has allowed a special teams goal.

Freshman Bruce Stachitas became the 15th different player to score a goal for the Mustangs this season as he netted his first career strike just 1:41 into the second period on an assist from classmate Mark Bowen.

With 31 seconds remaining in the second consecutive 5-on-3 opportunity for the visitors, freshman goaltender Pierce Dushenko played the puck ahead as the Valiants were trying to get a quick change and Davis was able to score one-on-one with the goalie.

Junior Jordan Watt had the primary assist as he extends his point streak to four. Meanwhile, Davis has a point in five straight.

The hosts went back up by two goals with an even strength goal at the 11:18 mark, 46 seconds after a power-play opportunity ended.

Davis scored his second power-play goal at the 8:12 mark of the third period to get the Mustangs back within one on assists from Stachitas and junior Doug Rose.

Stevenson tied the game with 4:13 remaining in regulation as freshman Colton McMenamin was able to poke the puck past goaltender Tyler Feaver. Classmates Evan Williams and Tyler Slusarczyk picked up the assists on the play.

But with 39 seconds remaining, Oscar Arfelt scored all the way from the blue for the game-winning goal. Arfelt finished with two goals in the game.

Manhattanville outshot the Mustangs, 38-30 and held a slight edge in face-offs, 42-39. Stevenson finished 2-for-7 on the power-play and 6-for-7 on the penalty kill.

Dushenko finished with 22 saves in the final two periods after taking over for junior Jacob Caffrey.

Stevenson returns to action on Friday, February 10 when the Mustangs return home to host an ECAC West contest versus Utica beginning at 7:00 p.m.
