No. 10 Mustangs Make Late Run at No. 2 RIT in Season Opener

Box Score

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Visiting and No. 10 Stevenson University scored six of the game's final eight goals, but second-ranked RIT held on for a 16-13 non-conference men's lacrosse victory at RIT Turf Field Saturday afternoon.

Stevenson (0-1) was led by senior Kyle D'Onofrio, who finished with five goals and an assist on the afternoon.  Junior Kyle Karsian tallied two goals and an assist while senior Morgan Pritchett and sophomore JT Thelen each had a pair of goals.  Senior Wade Korvin posted a goal and an assist, while freshman Ethan Christensen had the other Mustang tally.

RIT (2-0) was paced by five goals from senior Ryan Lee, while Braden Wallace and J.D. Hall each had three goals.

Stevenson trailed 12-7 after three quarters and 14-7 1:26 into the final frame after goals by Hall and Wallace a minute apart.  Pritchett scored at the 13:10 mark to make it 14-8, but Lee responded 23 seconds later to again give the Tigers a seven-goal advantage.

Thelen registered an unassisted goal at the 12:38 mark, followed by a Karsian goal with exactly 10 minutes left on a feed from Korvin to cut the lead to five, 15-10.  Stevenson won the ensuing faceoff and had a man-up opportunity on an RIT faceoff violation, but the guests couldn't convert, and Wallace eventually scored for RIT with 8:01 left to make it 16-10.

The Mustangs scored three times in a 60-second span to halve the lead and make it a 16-13 game.  D'Onofrio scored at the 3:56 mark, followed by a Korvin goal at 3:10.  Karsian made it 16-13 with 2:56 left on an extra-man opportunity after RIT was whistled for another faceoff violation.  RIT won the following faceoff and was awarded a man-up chance at 1:49, but the Tigers held the ball for over two minutes until a Korvin caused turnover with 35 seconds left.  Stevenson was unable to clear.

Lee got RIT on the board 37 seconds into the game, but D'Onofrio's first goal of the game at the 13:47 mark tied the contest 1-1.  RIT rattled off three straight goals, including a man-up score, to go up 4-1 with 10:01 left in the first, but back-to-back scores by D'Onofrio at 6:25 and 5:10 cut the lead to 4-3.  The Tigers held a 5-3 lead after one quarter, and extended the lead to 9-5 at halftime.

RIT scored the first three goals of the third quarter to build a 12-5 lead with 3:52 left, but a Pritchett tally at 2:40 and a D'Onofrio score with 1:37 left pulled Stevenson within five.

Nick Nesbitt had 13 saves in goal for RIT, while senior Ross Dinan made seven stops for Stevenson.  The Mustangs outshot the Tigers 51-37 and RIT had two more turnovers (23-21), but RIT had 44 ground balls to Stevenson's 27.  RIT was 2-6 with the man advantage, while Stevenson was 1-5, and both teams had 16 faceoff wins.

Korvin, D'Onofrio, senior Nathaniel LeQuang and junior Dylan Harris each had four ground balls to lead Stevenson, while senior Tom Brown had a team-high three caused turnovers.

Stevenson returns to action next Saturday, March 4, when it travels to No. 6 Gettysburg for a 1:00 contest.
