Box Score HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Stevenson men's volleyball sophomore Landon Shorts matched his career-best with 20 kills as the Mustangs posted a 25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23 Continental Volleyball Conference victory over 13th-ranked Juniata Friday evening at Memorial Gym.
The Mustangs (12-7, 3-2 CVC) have posted four consecutive wins over Juniata after posting just one victory in five of the previous six meetings. The team also has wins in four of its last five matches this season and have dropped just four sets during that stretch.
Short has averaged 10.8 kills in his four meetings versus the Eagles (10-5, 5-1 CVC) and has recorded double digit kills in 12 of his 19 matches this season.
Stevenson hit just .167 in the opening set compared to .417 for the hosts but were able to take the opening set after going on a late 7-4 run to give themselves five set points.
Juniata used a 9-3 run in the second set to take an 18-16 lead but the Mustangs answered with six straight points, including five on the serve of Shorts, including one service ace. The Eagles got within 23-24 but a kill by junior Alex Klunk gave the visitors a two set lead.
The third set featured 10 ties, including the final at 22-22 as the Eagles won the final three points to force a fifth set after back-to-back attack errors set up set point for the hosts. Stevenson recorded eight attack errors in the set.
It was another close set in the fourth, but the visitors won the final three points after the Eagles took a late 23-22 lead. Shorts and sophomore Jason Gardner recorded back-to-back kills before Gardner and senior Nicholas Gross had a block assist to seal the match.
Gardner finished with 11 kills, nine digs and three block assists while Gross recorded nine kills and seven digs. Senior Kyle Johnson had 41 assists while freshman Derek Tangorra had 14 digs.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, February 25 when the Mustangs travel to Thiel for a Continental Volleyball Conference contest beginning at 2:00 p.m.
