Box Score The Stevenson University men's volleyball team swept the Highlanders of Cairn 3-0 Friday night as the Mustangs picked up a second consecutive win and their first win in Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) play this season. Set scores were 25-13, 25-7 and 25-17.
Leading the Mustangs on the night was senior Michael Fehrs with seven kills and seven digs as sophomore Landon Shorts had five kills three digs and three serving aces. Senior Kyle Johnson led the team in assists with 23 while also recording four digs. Freshman Derek Tangorra added six digs. All 15 players on Stevenson's roster saw action Friday night.
In the opening set, Stevenson (10-6, 1-1 CVC) jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Following a timeout by Cairn (2-15, 0-4 CVC) with the Mustangs leading 12-3, the Mustangs generated five-straight points before the Highlanders could break the run making it 6-17. The Mustangs won the set on a Cairn attack error.
In the following set, the Mustangs continued their dominance as Stevenson never let their opponents reach double-digit points in the 25-7 set win. Following a kill by senior Nate Ellis, the Mustangs produced four-straight points stretching the lead to 7-2. Stevenson won the set with a service ace by senior Nicholas Gross.
In the final set the Mustangs jumped out to a 7-1 lead followed by a timeout by Cairn. The Highlanders managed to cut the lead down to eight with the Mustangs leading 18-10 but Stevenson didn't let up as the Mustangs won the last point on a Cairn service error.
Stevenson never trailed on the night as the Mustangs hit .343 while the Highlanders hit -.013 as Stevenson held Cairn to a negative hitting percentage in each of the first two sets. The Mustangs hit their best set in the third by hitting .522. They had a total of 31 assists, 28 digs, 32 kills and seven team blocks.
The Mustangs close out a two-game home stand Saturday Feb. 18 at 2:00 pm as they host Rutgers-Newark at Owings Mills Gymnasium in a rematch of last season's CVC final.
