Box Score

JAMAICA, N.Y. – The Stevenson University men's basketball team suffered its first defeat of the season, falling 88-80 at York (N.Y.) Tuesday evening.

Stevenson (3-1) was paced by senior Danzel Wright's 22 points as he went 4-10 from three-point land and 6-6 at the free throw line.  Junior Jaylin Johnson posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Mark Terrell added a career-best 14 points and six rebounds.  Junior Johnny Rhodes chipped in with eight points.

The Cardinals (1-3) placed six players in double figures paced by Edwin Sainvil's 22 points.  Ryan Smart notched 15 points and 14 rebounds.

The Mustangs trailed 34-32 at halftime but took their first lead of the second half, 42-41, at the 17:43 mark on a Johnson layup.  The two teams traded the lead six times over the next four minutes, and a conventional three-point play by Wright at the 13:42 mark put Stevenson up 53-51.   A Johnson basket with 12:44 to go extended the lead to four.

The two teams kept trading the lead until a 12-4 run by York capped by a three-pointer gave the hosts a 70-64 lead with 6:34 to play.  The Cardinals put the game away with a 7-0 spurt to go up by a baker's dozen, 79-66, with 1:55 left.  Stevenson did make one last run to cut the lead to seven, 81-74, with 55 ticks on the clock on a Johnson free throw, but got no closer.

Stevenson built a 12-5 lead four minutes into the game following a Keith Moody layup, before a 13-6 run gave York an 18-16 lead.  From there, the lead was never more than four points for either side, and the Cardinals went into the locker room up 34-32.

The Mustangs shot 42.2% from the floor and 36.4% (8-22) from three and went 18-23 from the free throw line while York was 18-28.  The Cardinals shot 42.7% overall and 35.3% from three, but outrebounded Stevenson 47-38, including 16-8 on the offensive glass, and generated a 15-8 advantage in second chance points.

Stevenson returns to action Saturday when it travels to Penn State Berks for a 1:00 contest.
