Gardner, Shorts Leads 12th-Ranked Mustangs to Wins over Marian, Elmira

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The sophomore duo of Jason Gardner and Landon Shorts combined for 49 kills as the 12th-ranked Stevenson men's volleyball team defeated Marian (Wis.) and Elmira Saturday afternoon at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

The Mustangs (6-2) have won five straight after a 25-13, 25-20, 21-25, 25-15 win over Marian and a 25-13, 25-21, 22-25, 23-25, 15-12 victory versus Elmira. The team also extending its home winnings streak to 17, with the last loss coming on March 6, 2015.

In the opener versus the Sabres (1-2), Stevenson jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead on the serve of senior Kyle Johnson. Marian was never able to recover and hit just 31 percent in the set while Gardner recorded five kills on five swings.

The second set featured five lead changes and eight ties, but four straight points by the hosts on three attack errors by the Sabres midway through the set opened a lead for the Mustangs that they did not relinquish.

Stevenson hit 71 percent in the second set and received five kills from senior Nate Ellis. Ellis also added four block assists in the set while Johnson recorded three. Ellis finished the match with one solo block and seven block assists.

The Sabres led from start to finish in the third set and hit a match-high 72 percent with a combined nine kills from Aaron Wendels and Jon Smallpage. The duo combined for 23 kills in the match.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the fourth as they hit 68 percent from the floor. Marian recorded eight errors compared to just 10 kills in the set.

Gardner and Shorts each recorded 11 kills and added nine and seven digs, respectively. Meanwhile, Johnson finished with 34 assists, seven digs, four block assists and three service aces.

Stevenson quickly made work of the Soaring Eagles (1-7) in the opening set, after hitting 71 percent from the floor with nine kills and just two errors. Ellis recorded three kills on three swings in the set. Shorts totaled four service aces in the set.

Gardner took over in the second set, recorded six of the team's 11 kills while Ellis and junior Alex Klunk each recorded two block assists.

The Mustangs dropped the next two sets and hit below 60 percent in both the sets while recorded six service errors. The team finished with a season-high 16 service aces.

Trailing 9-7 in the fifth set, Stevenson rallied to take a 12-11 lead before winning three of the last four points on back-to-back attack errors by the Eagles.

The trio of Shorts, Ellis and Gardner combined for 37 of the team's 50 kills while Johnson totaled 43 assists. Freshman Derek Tangorra and senior Michael Fehrs finished with 14 and 12 digs, respectively.

Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, February 4 when the Mustangs face Lasell, Ramapo and Baruch at Ramapo beginning at 11:00 a.m.
