Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - The Stevenson men's ice hockey team was held to a season-low 16 shots for the second straight game as the Mustangs allowed three second period goals in a 6-2 loss versus seventh-ranked Geneseo Saturday afternoon at Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena.
The Mustangs (8-6-2) scored two power-play goals for the fourth time this season and first in the last 11 games but allowed two power-play goals for the eighth time. The team also falls to 0-3-0 versus ranked opponents and 1-6-1 when held to two goals or fewer.
Stevenson had the game's first power-play opportunity after an interference call with 12:41 remaining in the opening period, but it was the Knights (11-2-2) who recorded the lone shot of the player advantage for the Mustangs.
With one second remaining on a five-on-three power-play for Geneseo, Cam Russell found the back of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead with 2:45 remaining in the opening frame. It is the 12th game this season that Stevenson has allowed a power-play goal.
The Knights came out firing in the opening minutes of the second period with junior goaltender Jacob Caffrey knocking away three shots while his defense blocked an additional two. But an elbowing penalty on the hosts gave the Mustangs another power-play try, which they converted.
Freshman Colin Woods scored his second power-play goal of the season on assist from junior Jordan Watt and freshman Tyler Slusarczyk. Watt has recorded a point in six of his last seven games, including three straight while Slusarczyk has had an assist in three of his last five games.
The hosts however, answered with three goals in the second period, including two in a 1:24 span. All three goals came on even strength, including the fourth goal from the Knights, which was redirected in off a shot from the point.
Geneseo added two more goals in the third period to go up 6-1, including a second power-play goal just 4:18 into the period. The Knights finished 2-for-7 on the power-play while Stevenson was 2-for-6.
Freshman Austin Swingle scored his first goal in the last five games with a power-play strike from classmate Alfred Panelin-Borg and junior Mike Davis with 6:26 remaining in regulation. Panelin-Borg has a point in five of his last seven games while Davis has a point in three of his last five.
Caffrey finished with 32 saves before giving way to freshman Pierce Dushenko who totaled seven while the Mustangs defense had 13 blocked shots. Freshman Xavier Abdella recorded three blocked shots while classmate Mitch Dolman had two.
Stevenson returns to action on Friday, January 20 when the Mustangs travel to Potsdam for a non-conference contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
