Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson field hockey freshman Kelsey Eure totaled 13 saves but seventh-ranked Salisbury was too much for the Mustangs as the Sea Gulls posted a 5-1 victory Wednesday evening at Mustang Stadium.
The Mustangs (0-2), who dropped just their second home opener in the last five years, were heavily outshot in the contest, recording just two shots comapred to 27 for Salisbury. The hosts put their only shot on frame in the opening half.
After the first shot of the game by the Sea Gulls (4-0) at the five minute mark, Stevenson took the ball down the other end of the field as sophomore Sara McVey shot a line drive from the left side. But the shot was batted away by Tressie Windsor.
Abbey Shobe put Salisbury on the board in the 12th minute as she was able to put the ball away on a scramble after the second penalty corner of the game for the visitors. Becca Rinaca picked up the assist.
Just 1:21 later, the Sea Gulls doubled their lead as Kristen Yingling centered a pass on the endline to get past Eure and to the stick of Emily Lemanski. Eure finished the opening half with nine saves as Salisbury fired 17 shots, including 11 on frame.
The guests stayed on the attack as they attempted four shots over the next minute of play, all saved by Eure. Salisbury got in scoring position twice more, but both shot attempts were blocked by Stevenson defenders. The Sea Gulls attempted just six shots in the final 20 minutes.
The Mustangs got on the board just five minutes into the second half as McVey connected with sophomore Alexis Young who put the cross into the back of the net to get back within one. But Salisbury answered just 1:49 later as Rinaca fired a shot over Eure.
Shobe added two more goals in the game, both unassisted, to complete a hat trick.
The Sea Gulls totaled 15 penalty corners in the game while the hosts attempted just two.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, September 10th when the Mustangs travel to Washington (Md.) for a non-conference matchup beginning at 1:00 p.m.
