Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Juniors Lauren Weaver and Annika Schwartz each totaled 14 kills as Stevenson University swept McDaniel College 3-0 in non-conference women's volleyball Tuesday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium. The Mustangs prevailed by scores of 27-25, 25-17, 25-19.
Stevenson (9-2) extended its win streak to eight with the victory, while it has won 11 straight at home dating back to last season. Weaver finished with just one error on 26 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage, while Schwartz hit .300 and also posted 11 digs for her third double-double of the season.
Sophomore Moriah Savage added eight kills on .412 hitting. Junior Megan Hren led the Mustangs defensively with 19 digs, while senior Kristen Brooks added 12. Freshman Julie Nightwine and senior Sara Bollinger registered 20 and 19 assists, respectively.
McDaniel (4-6), the defending Centennial Conference champion, was paced by eight kills by Caroline Savin.
Stevenson trailed 19-16 in the first set when it ran off five straight points to take its first lead, 21-19, on a Nightwine service ace. McDaniel responded with five of the next six points and was serving for set point up 24-22 when back-to-back kills by Weaver and Schwartz tied the set. The Green Terror reclaimed the lead on a Mustang service error, but a Weaver kill, a block by Schwartz and freshman Victoria Prokic and a McDaniel attack error closed out the frame.
The Mustangs led 11-9 in the second set when a 6-2 run capped by a kill by senior Kristen Brooks gave Stevenson a 17-11 lead. McDaniel did get the lead down to four, 19-15, but were unable to get closer and a Prokic kill closed out the set. The Mustangs hit .417 in the second set with 17 kills and just a pair of errors.
The third set was tied 9-9 before the hosts used a 6-2 run capped by a Schwartz service ace to go up 15-11. The Green Terror cut the lead to two twice, the last at 18-16, before four straight Mustang points gave Stevenson a 22-16 lead on a Brooks ace.
Stevenson hit at least .310 in each set and .367 for the match while limiting the Green Terror to .152 hitting.
Stevenson returns to action Friday when it faces No. 14 Carnegie Mellon and Ithaca on day one of the Franklin & Marshall Scramble in Lancaster, Pa.
