Vess Scores Late in 2-1 Men's Soccer Setback

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Freshman James Vess scored his first collegiate goal late for Stevenson University, but a pair of first half goals lifted Eastern Mennonite University to a 2-1 men's soccer victory Sunday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.

Eastern Mennonite (2-1-2) got on the board in the 19th minute following a free kick.  Juan Luna sent a free kick into the penalty area from 30 yards out that Emmanuel Boamah was able to put away for his first goal of the season.  The Royals made it 2-0 at the 38:53 mark when Parker Leap controlled a long pass from midfield, took two long touches and fired a low shot past senior Stevenson (0-4-1) keeper Michael Tringali.

Both teams went down a man following red cards at the 60-minute mark, and Stevenson went a man up just over four minutes later following a second EMU red card.  The Mustangs applied pressure late and broke through when Vess buried a free kick through traffic with 18 seconds remaining.

Tringali made a pair of saves for Stevenson.  Matthew Overacker played the first half in goal for Eastern Mennonite and made two saves before giving way to Cody Martin for the final 45 minutes.  Martin turned aside five shots.  The Mustangs held a 14-10 shot advantage and doubled EMU in corner kicks (6-3).

Stevenson returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Neumann for a 4:00 contest.
