Box Score GRANTHAM, Pa. - The Stevenson women's lacrosse team was limited to three goals and just 14 shots as No. 17 Messiah won its second consecutive MAC Commonwealth title with a 13-3 victory Saturday afternoon at Starry Athletic Complex.
It was the third straight meeting between the second-seeded Mustangs (10-9) and the top-seeded Mustangs in the conference title game, with all games played at Messiah. Stephanie Athens was named the Most Valuable Player after totaling seven points on six goals and one assist.
Facing a 2-0 deficit just past the midway point of the opening half, Stevenson got within one on an unassisted tally by junior Olivia Monteiro. Monteiro finished the season with 11 goals in her final three games and led the team with 32.
Messiah answered with a 4-0 to close the first half before tallying the first four of the second to build a 10-1 lead with 17:09 remaining. Monteiro stopped the run with a free-position goal, her seventh of the season, before Athens scored back-to-back goals to make it a ten-goal lead.
Senior Carli Bafford scored in the championship game for the third straight season with an unassited goal in the final minute. Classmate Shelby Walter finished with three caused turnovers, two ground balls and a draw control in her final game.
Senior Maggie Lawder finished with eight saves while classmate Kellie McLaughlin finished her career as the all-time leader in games played with 75.
