Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Tournament Most Valuable Player Matt Tompkins posted three goals, and the Mustangs posted a shutout in the second half as top-seeded and No. 10 Stevenson University posted a 10-3 win over second-seeded Messiah College in the title game of the 2016 MAC Commonwealth Men's Lacrosse Championship Saturday night at Mustang Stadium. The title marks the fourth straight tournament championship for Stevenson since it entered the league prior to the 2013 season.
With the win, Stevenson (15-4) extended its win streak to 12 games and earned the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship. The Mustangs will be making their eighth straight NCAA appearance, and will learn its next opponent when the NCAA selection show airs Sunday night at 9:00 pm on NCAA.com.
Messiah (11-7) was making its second straight MAC Commonwealth title game appearance.
Tompkins was named MVP after scoring nine goals in the championship, scoring six in a semifinal win over Albright before recording three Saturday. Junior Kyle D'Onofrio finished with two goals and three assists for Stevenson, while senior Stephen Banick totaled two goals and an assist. Junior Parish Young posted two goals, while junior Sean Ohlhaver had the other Mustang tally. Senior Pat Candon handed out three assists.
Matthew Franken had two Messiah's three goals, while Chris Bry had the other score.
Stevenson and Messiah were tied 1-1 after one quarter when Ohlhaver put the Mustangs up 2-1 49 seconds into the second quarter. Franken scored at the 12:13 mark to tie the game 2-2, but from there, the hosts scored four times in a span of 4:19 to build a 6-2 lead. D'Onofrio scored at 11:19, followed by Tompkins at 10:33, Banick at 9:15 and Tompkins again with 7:00 to go. Bry scored the final Falcon goal to make it 6-3 at intermission.
The Mustangs scored two goals apiece in each of the final two quarters while holding Messiah scoreless. In the third, D'Onofrio scored at 12:04 and Young at 6:48. Young scored at the 12:26 mark of the fourth before Tompkins closed out the scoring with a man-up goal with 10:52 left.
Freshman Garrett Egnaczyk improved to 9-0 in goal by making nine saves and allowing three goals, while Sam Stengel and Brooks Arnold combined to make 14 saves, with Stengel working the first 49:08. The Mustangs outshot the Falcons 44-28, including 23-14 over the final 30 minutes, and won 10-of-16 faceoffs. Stevenson also picked up 34 ground balls to Messiah's 29.
Junior Nathaniel LeQuang won 8-of-13 faceoffs for Stevenson. Dom DeFazio had a team-high four caused turnovers, while sophomore Lito Flanagan picked up nine ground balls. The Mustangs matched a season high with 17 caused turnovers.
