Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - For the fourth consecutive season, the second-seeded Stevenson women's lacrosse team defeated third-seeded Lebanon Valley to advance to the MAC Commonwealth Championship with an 8-6 victory Wednesday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.
The Mustangs (10-8) will face top-seeded Messiah in the title game for the third straight season on Saturday, May 7 at 1:00 p.m. Stevenson won the championship in 2014 while the Falcons won a season ago. Messiah has also won the last three meetings.
Sophomore Jillian Henry started the scoring with an unassisted tally just 1:58 into the contest. Henry, who finished with a team-high two goals in the game, has scored in three of her last four games. It was also her second multi-goal game of the season.
Sam Boyce tied the game for the Dutchmen (10-7) with her first of two goals 1:48 later before the hosts scored back-to-back goals to take a two-goal lead. Henry knotted her second goal while junior Tori Bruno scored in her seventh straight game for her 20th goal of the year.
Lebanon Valley answered with back-to-back goals of its own with two free-position goals just over midway through the opening half to tie the game once again. The two teams were tied five times.
Tied at 4-4, freshman Dana Stevens scored her second goal of the season on a free-position shot with six seconds remaining to give the Mustangs a one-goal lead at the break.
Emma Jones scored her second goal of the game for the visitors just over five minutes into the second half before both teams went on a 12-minute scoring drought. Senior Shelby Walter broke the scoreless streak with a free-position tally with 11:55 remaining. Walter has scored five goals over the last three games and has totaled seven points over that span.
Following a timeout by the Mustangs with 1:12 remaining in regulation and the score knotted at 6-6, senior Carli Bafford scored the go-ahead goal with 29.3 seconds left on a feed from behind the net from sophomore Hollie Larrimore.
Bruno won the ensuing draw control and junior Brady Heher scored an insurance goal to seal to win for the Mustangs.
Bafford and junior Rachael Akshar both finished with three ground balls and two caused turnovers while Bafford added two draw controls. In net, senior Maggie Lawder recorded eight saves.
Stevenson outshot the Dutchmen, 22-21 and held an 11-8 advantage in ground balls. The hosts also won 10 of the 16 draw controls.
