Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Ethan Heisman totaled four goals and an assist as No. 15 Cabrini College topped No. 10 Stevenson University 15-10 in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship Wednesday night at Mustang Stadium.  The Cavaliers (15-4) advance to Saturday's second round against Gettysburg, while the Mustangs (15-5) saw a 12-game win streak snapped as they were making their eighth straight NCAA appearance.

Matt LoParo finished with three goals and two assists for Cabrini, which beat Stevenson for the first time in five NCAA meetings.  Jordan Krug added two goals and four assists for the Cavaliers.

Stevenson was led by senior Stephen Banick, who capped his standout career with three goals and four assists.  Banick finishes his career with 140 goals and 129 assists for 269 points, placing him third all-time in goals, fifth in assists and third in career points.  Classmate Matt Tompkins registered four goals in his final game in a Mustang uniform and finished with 13 goals in three postseason games for Stevenson this season, while his 97 career tallies are tied for ninth all-time.  Junior Wade Korvin, who missed the last two games, notched two goals and an assist, while senior Pat Candon had the other Mustang tally.  Candon finishes his career seventh in program history in points with 165 (85 goals, 80 assists)

The hosts trailed 7-5 at halftime before Candon halved the lead with an unassisted goal 1:06 into the second half.  Cabrini responded with three goals in a span of 3:06 to take a 10-6 lead with 9:52 on the clock on a Heisman goal.  Banick stopped the run with a man-up goal at 9:14, but goals by LoParo at 7:43 and James Magnani at 4:54 pushed the Cavalier advantage to five.  Banick scored 1:13 before the end of the third to make it 12-8 after three.

Banick scored again with 11:44 remaining to pull Stevenson within three, 12-9, but a Krug man-up score at 8:37 made it 13-9.  Tompkins responded 13 seconds later off the draw to again make it a three-score game, but a LoParo goal at 3:14 and a Cole Campbell empty-netter with 17 seconds left sealed the win.

Trailing 4-1 just under three minutes into the second quarter following a Korvin tally, the Cavaliers ripped off five straight goals to take a 6-4 lead on a man-up goal by Krug with 3:08 left before halftime.  Tompkins scored his third goal of the game to halve the lead at the 2:24 mark, but a goal by Evan Downey with 1:09 left gave the visitors a 7-5 lead at the break.

Stevenson scored all three goals in the first quarter, with Tompkins opening the scoring on a feed from Banick at 10:56.  Korvin got on the board at the 5:57 mark, then Tompkins scored a transition goal off a midfield turnover with 2:25 left to make it 3-0.  Cabrini got on the board 1:05 into the second quarter, breaking a Stevenson scoreless streak of over 49 minutes dating back to Saturday's MAC Commonwealth championship game against Messiah.

Cabrini goalie Tyler Morrell had 11 saves, while Mustang counterpart freshman Garrett Egnaczyk turned aside a career-best 13 shots.  Cabrini outshot Stevenson 56-48, including 20-8 in the second quarter that saw the Cavaliers score seven times.  Cabrini won 16-of-29 faceoffs and picked up 42 ground balls to Stevenson's 34. The guests were also 3-5 in man-up situations, while the Mustangs were 1-3.

Senior Chad Williams had four caused turnovers for Stevenson and also picked up four ground balls, while Egnaczyk and sophomore Dom DeFazio each recorded five ground balls.  Williams' finishes his career with 90 caused turnovers, good for fourth all-time.  Freshman Rocco Bruno came off the bench to win 5-of-7 at the faceoff X.
