Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. – No. 15 Stevenson University downed its third opponent ranked in the USILA Division III Top 5 this season, topping No. 4 York (Pa.) College 10-8 Friday night at Mustang Stadium. The Mustangs have won four straight and six of their last seven.
Stevenson (7-4) defeated then-No. 5 Cabrini 7-4 on March 18 at the Mustang Classic, then toppled then-No. 1 Tufts 11-10 four days later. York (12-2) suffered just its second loss of the season, with the other coming to Lynchburg at the Mustang Classic on March 19.
Senior Matt Tompkins had three goals and an assist for Stevenson, while junior Wade Korvin and sophomore Kyle Karsian each had a pair of goals. Senior Stephen Banick finished with a goal and an assist, while juniors Parish Young and Sean Ohlhaver each had single tallies.
The Spartans were led by Austin Glab and Dan Kaplan, who notched two goals apiece.
Stevenson led 5-3 at halftime but saw its lead cut to 5-4 40 seconds into the second half on a Kaplan goal. Korvin scored a behind-the-back goal on a feed from Tompkins at the 9:30 mark to make it 6-4, and Tompkins made it 7-4 at the 3:20 mark with an individual effort. Dillon Hannah cut the lead to 7-5 with 27 seconds left, but the Mustangs won the faceoff and Tompkins scored an over-the-shoulder goal off a feed from sophomore Lito Flanagan to make it 8-5 10 seconds later.
Korvin scored seven seconds into the fourth after Nathaniel Lequang won the faceoff and found Korvin in transition. Andrew Gamble scored at the 13:09 mark for York, then a man-up goal by Kaplan at 9:02 cut the Mustang lead to two, 9-7.
Karsian scored on a feed from junior Kyle D'Onofrio just under a minute later to make it a 10-7 game. Hunter Davis closed out the scoring with a goal for York at the 6:13 mark. The Spartans possessed the ball for much of the rest of the way, putting up nine shots, but none that found the back of the net.
Stevenson jumped out to a 2-0 lead just 1:18 into the game. Young scored at the 14:11 mark, while Banick made it 2-0 29 seconds later. Glab scored both of his goals in the remainder of the first, striking at 12:01 and 8:00 to make it 2-2 after one.
Cameron Leech gave York its only lead of the game at the 14:20 mark of the second quarter, before the Mustangs scored the final three goals of the half. Karsian scored at the 8:41 mark, while Tompkins scored off a feed from Banick at 5:17. Ohlhaver scored at 2:53 to give Stevenson a 5-3 lead heading into the locker room.
Freshman goalie Garrett Egnaczyk made 10 saves for Stevenson, while Spartan counterpart Caleb Abney made five saves. York outshot the Mustangs 44-25, including 29-7 over the final 30 minutes, and picked up 41 ground balls to 27 for the hosts. Lequang did win 11-of-20 faceoffs for Stevenson. York was 2-3 with the man advantage while Stevenson did not play a man up all night as the Spartans were whistled for just one penalty.
Stevenson returns to action Saturday night when it hosts Arcadia University in a 7:00 MAC Commonwealth contest at Mustang Stadium.
