WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel hit four home runs on the day, including three in game two, while the Stevenson softball team left 16 base runners stranded as the Mustangs fell 11-7 and 8-1 to the Green Terror in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.
The Mustangs (13-23) totaled 12 hits in the opening game but could not come back from a six-run deficit before being held to just six hits in game two. Stevenson has allowed five or more runs in four of its last five games.
The hosts used a four-hit second inning to take a three-run lead, including two unearned runs all with just one out. But Stevenson turned a double play to get out of the inning as senior Kristen Mueller caught a line drive before throwing the base runner out at first.
A two-out single up the middle by junior Naomi Fields got two runs back for the visitors as both seniors Molly Hoyt and Emily Soller came around to score after a single and a double, respectively. Soller, who finished with two hits, recorded her team leading 12th multi-hit game.
A two-out RBI double by Jamie Weisser put the Green Terror (23-15) back up by one in the third inning before Tayler Hishon made it an 8-2 game with a one out grand slam in the fifth.
The Mustangs went through the entire batting order in the sixth inning as Mueller, senior Tiffany Kahl, Hoyt, Soller and Fields recorded five RBIs in a row. But Stevenson only got within 8-7 before Jamie Weisser returned to the pitching circle to record the final two outs of the inning.
Mueller's RBI single came with the bases loaded as the senior improved to 5-for-5 with the bases loaded this season. Two of those hits went for grand slams.
McDaniel added three runs to its lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, including two bases loaded walks. Weisser earned her fifth win of the year after holding the Mustangs hitless in the seventh.
Fields was 2-for-4 with a season-high three RBIs while Mueller and sophomore Kate Finnen both added two hits.
In game two, Mueller and Kahl hit back-to-back singles to start the first inning before a fielder's choice by Soller scored Mueller from third to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
The Green Terror quickly erased their deficit in the bottom of the inning as the hosts scored three runs, including a bases loaded walk and a bases loaded infield groundout. McDaniel then broke open the game in the sixth inning with back-to-back home runs.
Morgan Scardina hit a three-run homer to end the game in the sixth inning as the hosts finished the game with 12 hits and 11 RBIs.
Mueller totaled two hits in the game and is now 10 hits shy of tying the school record with 176 career hits.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, April 30 when the Mustangs host a key conference doubleheader versus Albright on Senior Day. The team will honor seniors Hoyt, Kahl, Mueller, Soller and Laura Welch.
