No. 15 Mustangs Hold Off Lynchburg for Fifth Win in Six Tries

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Senior Stephen Banick totaled two goals and three assists and sophomore Kyle Karsian scored the go-ahead goal with 10:21 left as No. 15 Stevenson University edged Lynchburg College 10-9 in non-conference men's lacrosse Saturday night at Shellenberger Field.

Junior Wade Korvin also had a pair of goals for Stevenson (6-4), which has won five of six after a 1-3 start.  Seniors Matt Tompkins and Taylor Morgan, juniors Parish Young and Kyle D'Onofrio and freshman Wesley Reid each had single tallies for the Mustangs.

Lynchburg (5-6), which reached the NCAA Division III national championship game last season, was paced by Austin Stewart's three goals, while Evan Lombardo and Aaron Murphy each scored twice.

Stevenson trailed 7-6 following a goal by Murphy just over two minutes into the third quarter.  The Mustangs reeled off three goals in the final five minutes of the third to take a 9-7 lead into the final frame.

Korvin forced the game's sixth tie with his unassisted goal at the 4:36 mark, then the Mustangs took their first lead with 2:47 left in the third on a Banick goal.  Korvin scored again with 37 seconds left off a feed by Banick to make it 9-7.

Lynchburg started the fourth quarter in a man-up situation and cut the lead to 9-8 13 seconds into the fourth.  Following another 60-second Mustang penalty at 13:51, Lombardo scored at the 12:58 mark to forge the game's seventh and final tie at 9-9 on the fourth man-up goal by the Hornets.

Following a failed Lynchburg clear after a Stevenson turnover, Karsian notched his 10th goal of the season at the 10:21 mark to give the guests a 10-9 lead.  The Mustangs won the ensuing faceoff and held the ball for nearly three minutes, putting three shots on goal, but all three were turned aside by LC goalie Chris Hawley.  The two teams traded possession several times before Lynchburg had the final possession with 22 seconds to go after a Mustang turnover, but a final shot by Stewart was saved by Stevenson goalie freshman Garrett Egnaczyk.

Stewart had a pair of goals in the first quarter, but the game was tied 2-2 following Reid's tally at the 2:06 mark.  The Hornets' Dane Angell scored with two seconds to go giving the hosts a 3-2 lead after one frame.

Lynchburg made it 4-2 seven seconds into the second on Stewart's third goal, before tallies by Young at 11:36 and a man-up goal by Banick at 10:32 tied the game 4-4.  The two teams traded goals the rest of the half and D'Onofrio's goal 2:32 before halftime tied the game 6-6 at the break.

Egnaczyk made 10 saves while Hawley had 13 as the Mustangs outshot the Hornets 46-30.  Stevenson won 12-of-21 faceoffs on the evening and picked up 37 ground balls to Lynchburg's 27.  The Mustangs were also 13-16 on clears while the hosts were just 12-18 on clear attempts.  Lynchburg did convert four of its five man-up opportunities.

Sophomore Dom DeFazio had five caused turnovers and five ground balls for Stevenson, while Morgan and senior Chad Williams each had a pair of caused turnovers.

Stevenson steps out of conference for the final time Friday night when it hosts fourth-ranked York (Pa.) College in a 7:00 contest at Mustang Stadium.
