Mustangs Earn Split With Washington (Md.) as Stevenson Strikes Out Cancer

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson softball senior Molly Hoyt homered for the second straight game while junior Naomi Fields extended her hitting streak to six as the Mustangs split a non-conference doubleheader versus Washington (Md.) Wednesday afternoon at Weinberg-Fine Stadium.

The Mustangs (10-16), who hosted their fifth-annual Strikeout Cancer game, dropped the opening game 14-5 in six innings after committing five errors before salvaging the split with a 5-2 win with a 10-hit game two.

A two-run two-out inning got the Shorewomen (16-16) going early as the visitors totaled a run in five of the six innings. Washington (Md.) scored five runs in both the fourth and six innings, totaling six of its 16 hits in the fourth.

With the visitors holding a nine-run lead through four, the Mustangs avoided a five-inning loss with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, highlighted by the home run by Hoyt and a three-RBI double by senior Emily Soller. The team is hitting .409 (9-for-22) with the bases loaded this season.

Hoyt was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate accounting for half of the team's hits. Soller, Fields and freshman Kayla Maggio combined for the other three.

Stevenson totaled a season-high five errors in the game and have totaled an error 14-straight games. The Mustangs have committed an error in 22 of the 26 games.

With just one combined hit through three and half innings, the hosts used a three-run third inning to take its first lead of the game. Both Soller and senior Tiffany Kahl recorded RBI singles while Kahl scored on an error following a single by sophomore Kate Finnen.

The Mustangs extended their lead to five as Fields drew a bases loaded walk in her only plate appearance of the game before sophomore Brooke Steinbach scored on a wild pitch.

The visitors scored twice in the sixth inning to cut it to a three-run game, but Hoyt retired three of the final four batters in the seventh.

Steinbach allowed just one hit through five innings while striking out three before Hoyt came in for relief. Soller and Kahl both totaled two hits.

Mueller scored two runs on the day and moves four runs shy of tying the program record.

Stevenson will play its fourth doubleheader in five days as they travel to Alvernia for a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader on Thursday, April 14 beginning at 3:30 p.m.
