Mueller Homers Twice, Mustangs Drop Two to Widener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson softball senior Kristen Mueller hit her sixth and seventh home runs of the season but the Mustangs fell 6-2 and 8-6 to second place Widener in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Weinberg-Fine Stadium.

The Mustangs (7-15, 4-4 MAC Commonwealth) have dropped the last six versus the Pride, including two straight regular season doubleheaders. Stevenson has committed eight errors over the last four meetings, including one each in today's games.

After a scoreless first three innings, the hosts took a 2-0 lead in the opener after a two-run home run by Mueller. Mueller fought back from an 0-2 count to get it to a full count before hitting the ball over the left field fence.

Widener (19-3, 8-2 MAC Commonwealth) responded with a one-out two RBI double by Lauren DelRomano to level the game in the top of the fifth inning. The Pride, who were hitless through four innings, recorded three in the inning.

Sophomore Brooke Steinbach recorded the first two outs of the seventh inning, but DelRomano doubled followed by a walk by Alie Alkins. With two runners on, Katie Sterling tripled to right field to bring home the go-ahead runs. The Pride added two more in the inning for the four run win.

Junior Naomi Fields went 2-for-3 at the plate while senior Molly Hoyt and sophomore Alli Culp each recorded a sacrifice hit.

In game two, the Mustangs began a rally from an eight-run deficit after the Pride committed an error with two outs in the fifth inning to extend the game. Stevenson went on the score five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, including doubles by both Fields and sophomore Sabrina Gordon.

Mueller also homered for the second time on the day to also score senior Tiffany Kahl and bring it to a two-run game with one out. But Ally Horvath came on to pitch to record the final two outs to earn the save.

With a hit in both games, Mueller extended her hitting streak to seven. The trio of Fields, senior Emily Soller and sophomore Kate Finnen all recorded two hits.

Stevenson returns to action tomorrow, Monday, April 11 when the Mustangs host the first of two non-conference doubleheaders beginning with Eastern at 3:00 p.m.
