Box Score READING, Pa. - Highlighted by six points on five goals and one assist by junior Olivia Monteiro, the Stevenson women's lacrosse team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 15-6 victory over Alvernia in the MAC Commonwealth opener Friday afternoon at Schlager Memorial Field.
The Mustangs (3-7, 1-0 MAC) improved to 22-2 in league play since joining the conference in 2013 and has outscored their opponents, 403-175. The team has held its opponents to less than 10 goals in 19 of the 24 MAC Commonwealth contests.
Joining Monteiro with multi-goals was the trio of juniors Brady Heher and Tori Bruno and sophomore Jillian Henry who all recorded a hat trick. Stevenson recorded a season-best 36 shots and finished with nine free-position goals, the most since March 10, 2009 when the Mustangs totaled 10.
Heher scored the opening goal just 46 seconds into the contest. Heher has scored in four straight games and in six of her last seven. She has failed to score just twice this season.
The Crusader (4-3, 0-1 MAC Commonwealth) responded with the first of three goals by Abby McCarthy at the 27:13 mark but Heher scored just three seconds later to spark a 3-0 run, including back-to-back goals by Bruno.
The hosts halted the run with two goals of its own but Stevenson scored the final two goals of the opening half, including a free-position goal by sophomore Hollie Larrimore. It was the 11th goal of the season for Larrimore, matching her goal total during her rookie campaign.
Henry scored all three of her goals in the second half while Monteiro scored four of her five goals in the second frame. The duo combined for five free-position goals. Monteiro matched her career-best with six points and five goals set in a win over Widener on April 25 a season ago.
Senior Shelby Walter continued her defensive dominance finishing with four ground balls, three caused turnovers and a draw control. Classmate Carli Bafford totaled eight draw controls while junior Rachael Akshar had six ground balls.
In net, senior Maggie Lawder finished with eight saves and has combined for 34 saves in her last four games.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, April 9 when the Mustangs travel to Arcadia for a MAC Commonwealth contest beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Mustangs defeated the Knights, 14-13 a season ago.
