Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The 10th-ranked Stevenson men's volleyball team posted its third win over a ranked team this season as the Mustangs swept No. 15 Juniata to remain unbeaten in the Continental Volleyball Conference with a straights set victory Friday evening at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
The Mustangs (14-5, 8-0 CVC), who had dropped five of their last six matches prior to this season, snap two-game losing skid with a 25-20, 25-14, 25-16 win. The team improved to 5-0 at home this season and 13-4 over the last two years.
After trailing by two early, Stevenson won a long rally that featured eights attacks before a Juniata error gave the hosts a 9-8 lead, one it would not relinquish. The teams would tie eight times during the set and trade the lead just three times.
Out of a timeout and trailing by three, the Eagles won four of the next five points to level the set at 16-16. The two teams tied twice more during the set before the Mustangs won seven of the final nine points. Senior Kyle Pottieger totaled three kills during the run while freshman Landon Shorts added two.
After Juniata took a 2-1 lead to begin the second set, Stevenson used a 12-1 run to take a 10-point lead behind a solo block and three block assists by Potteiger. Shorts also recorded a solo block during the run.
The Mustangs never trailed in the third set despite hitting just .185. The team finished with a .390 hitting percentage, marking the 13th time in 19 games this season Stevenson has hit above .300.
Shorts and junior Michael Fehrs each totaled a team-high nine kills while Pottieger and junior Nate Ellis each finished with eight. Meanwhile, freshman Owen Terroso had a match-high eight digs.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, March 5 when the Mustangs host a Continental Volleyball Conference contest versus Thiel beginning at 2:00 p.m.
