Mustangs Stay Unbeaten in CVC Play with a Four Set Win Over Marymount (Va.)

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - In a battle between the top two teams in the Continental Volleyball Conference, the seventh-ranked Stevenson men's volleyball team hit over .300 for the 17th time this season in a four set win over Marymount (Va.) Wednesday evening at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

The Mustangs (22-6, 10-0 CVC) remained unbeaten in CVC play and at home with the win while extending their winning streak to four. The team has won nine of its last 10 matches, falling only to No. 3 Carthage.

Leading by just one late in the opening set, Stevenson used a 8-5 run to close the set. Junior Nate Ellis totaled two kills in addition to two solo blocks while senior Kyle Pottieger totaled four kills on six swings.

The two teams had 12 ties and three lead changes in the set as neither team led by more than two for most of the frame. The Mustangs recorded a .400 attack percentage on 15 kills and just three errors while the Saints (17-9, 9-2 CVC) finished with a .375 hitting percentage on 16 kills and four errors.

Trailing 16-14 in the second set, the Mustangs scored the next three points to take a one-point lead and force a Marymount timeout. The Saints won six of the next 10 points to build a 22-21 lead.

Tied at 25-25, senior Patrick Schuyler recorded one of his 14 kills before an attack error by the Saints gave Stevenson a two sets to none lead. Schuyler had six kills in the set while freshman Landon Shorts totaled five.

Marymount hit just .077 in the set with seven errors on 26 attempts compared to .343 for the hosts as the teams tied 10 times in addition to four lead changes.

The Mustangs thought they won match point leading 25-24 following a block by Ellis, but the Saints kept the ball alive and rallied to take a 26-25 lead to force a Stevenson timeout. Marymount won the next point on a solo block Tomasz Ksiazkiewicz to force a fourth set.

It was the first set the Mustangs have dropped in CVC play and first in their seven home matches this season.

The trio of Ellis, Shorts and freshman Jason Gardner all finished with three kills in the set as Stevenson still outhit the Saints, .385 to .294. The Mustangs totaled two of their three errors in the final six points.

The fourth set featured a game of runs. Trailing 10-6 early in the fourth set, Marymount scored four straight points to knot the game at 10-10 and force a Stevenson timeout. The Mustangs responded with three straight points but the visitors came right back with four of their own.

Down by one, the Mustangs won 12 of the final 17 points, including seven of the final nine.

Shorts finished with 13 kills, four digs and two service aces while Ellis totaled nine kills, five block assists, three solo blocks and two digs. Senior Rob Winger totaled 51 assists, six digs and three kills.

TJ Wiechecki paced the Saints with a match-high 22 kills, seven digs, two solo blocks and two service aces.

Stevenson hits the road for the final time this regular season when the Mustangs travel to No. 5 Rutgers-Newark on Friday, March 25. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
