Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Senior Connor Skeen made 12 saves and the Stevenson University defense held fifth-ranked Cabrini College scoreless for a stretch of over 45 minutes as the Mustangs handed the Cavaliers their first loss of the season by a 7-4 score Friday night in the Greene Turtle Classic men's lacrosse tournament at Mustang Stadium.
Stevenson (3-3) has now defeated back-to-back ranked opponents as it downed No. 12 SUNY-Cortland last Saturday. The four goals are the fewest surrendered to a non-conference opponent since defeating Birmingham Southern 13-2 in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament. It also marked the first loss of the season for Cabrini (5-1), with two of those wins coming over ranked opponents.
Trailing 3-1 after one quarter, Stevenson scored three times in the second to take a 4-3 lead into intermission. Senior Stephen Banick scored at the 13:21 mark to make it 3-2, then just 34 seconds later, junior Wade Korvin found the back of the net to tie the game 3-3. The game remained deadlocked until 3:26 left before intermission, when Banick scored on a feed from junior Kyle D'Onofrio to give the Mustangs the lead for the first time since taking a 1-0 lead in the first.
D'Onofrio had the lone goal of the third period, scoring on an assist from Banick with 6:53 left in the frame. Banick registered the first goal of the fourth, scoring in transition from just inside the restraining line with 13:18 left to make it 6-3. A tally by junior Morgan Pritchett with 10:38 to go pushed the advantage to four. Cabrini closed out the scoring and snapped its scoreless string of 45:16 with a goal with 4:15 remaining.
Korvin gave Stevenson a 1-0 lead 5:06 into the game on a feed from senior Matt Tompkins. Cabrini reeled off three straight goals in a span of just under four minutes, with a goal by Sean Wagner at the 4:31 mark giving the Cavaliers a 3-1 lead.
Banick finished with three goals and an assist on the evening, while Korvin had a pair of goals and D'Onofrio totaled a goal and an assist.
Skeen's 12 saves match a career high, while Cabrini counterpart Tyler Morrell turned aside eight shots. The Cavaliers outshot Stevenson 32-28, but the Mustangs took 18 shots to Cabrini's 15 over the final 30 minutes.
Defensively, junior Parish Young had four caused turnovers for Stevenson, as the guests had 26 turnovers to the 19 Mustang giveaways. Senior Chad Williams had five ground balls and three caused turnovers of his own.
Stevenson faces No. 18 Dickinson in the second round of the Greene Turtle Classic Saturday at 8:00 pm at Mustang Stadium. The Red Devils fell 9-7 to No. 14 Denison in Friday's first game.
