Mustangs Drop Back-to-Back One Run Games to Rutgers-Newark, Agnes Scott

| Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Stevenson softball team went 4-for-26 with runners in scoring position and left a combined 18 runners left on base as the Mustangs dropped two one run decisions versus Rutgers-Newark and Agnes Scott Wednesday morning at the National Training Center.

The Mustangs (1-7), who had runners in 13 of the 14 innings played, fell 2-1 to Rutgers-Newark before dropping a 3-2 decision versus Agnes Scott.

Versus the Scarlet Raiders (3-6), Stevenson was 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position after having a base-runner in every inning. Sophomore Brooke Steinbach had a leadoff double in the top of the second and advanced to third on the next by classmate Jasmyn Ogletree. But the team followed with a strikeout and groundout to end the inning.

In the bottom of the inning, Rutgers-Newark bunted for a base hit to begin the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on the throw. The Raiders took a 1-0 lead on a two-out single through the right side.

Senior Kristen Mueller got on base to begin the fifth inning after a fielding error by the second basemen who was covering first base on the bunt. Freshman Erin Stephey advanced Mueller to second on a sacrifice bunt before advancing to third on a fielders choice during the at bat of sophomore Kate Finnen.

On the next at bat, senior Emily Soller took the first pitch to right centerfield for an RBI single to knot the game at 1-1. Soller finished 3-for-3 at the plate.

Rutgers-Newark responded with a two-out RBI double to left field to score the go ahead run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Mustangs kept it at a one run game in the bottom of the inning as senior Laura Welch had a diving catch with two outs and runners on second and third to end the inning.

Needing to score to keep the game alive, Finnen had a leadoff single in the top of the seventh before advancing on a sacrifice bunt by Soller. But Stevenson could not advance her any further as the next two batter flied and grounded out, respectively.

Stephey and Ogletree were both 2-for-3 at the plate. Steinbach pitched a complete game with two strikeouts and was 1-for-4 at the plate.

In the second game versus the Scotties (3-11), the Mustangs got down 1-0 as Agnes Scott scored on a wild pitch after the runner on second had advanced to third on an error.

With runners on first and third and one out, the Scotties attempted to steal second and were safe on the throw but Mueller caught the runner stealing home with her throw to the plate. The Mustangs ended the inning as freshman Kayla Maggio threw the runner out at third on a steal attempt.

Maggio started the bottom of the third inning with a leadoff hit by pitch. With two outs, Maggio came around to score from second base after Stephey was safe on a throwing error by the shortstop.

The Scotties retook a one run lead as they scored a two-out bases loaded walk in the fifth inning.

Following a leadoff double to left center by Finnen, the Mustangs tied the game at 2-2 with a one-out RBI single by Steinbach. With two outs and a runner on second, Welch hit a single to right field but Steinbach was thrown out at home to end the inning.

Finnen finished 2-for-3. Meanwhile, senior Molly Hoyt pitched 4.0 innings and scattered three hits with one strikeout.

Stevenson concludes its eight-game Florida road trip on Friday, March 18 when the Mustangs face Carthage and Indiana Tech beginning at 11:00 a.m.
