Korvin's Six Points Push No. 19 Mustangs Past No. 12 SUNY Cortland

Box Score

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Wade Korvin totaled five goals and an assist as No. 19 Stevenson University snapped a three-game losing streak with a 13-7 non-conference men's lacrosse victory over No. 12 SUNY Cortland at Stadium Red Saturday afternoon.

In addition to Korvin, three other players had two goals apiece for Stevenson (2-3).  Senior Matt Tompkins finished with two goals and two assists, while juniors Kyle D'Onofrio and Parish Young each totaled two goals and an assist.  Senior Stephen Banick added a goal and two assists, while classmate Pat Candon added the other Mustang goal.

Korvin's five goals are the most in a game by a Mustang since Tompkins had five against Lycoming on April 21 of last season.

Seven different players scored for SUNY Cortland (1-3), with Zach Hopps, Dean Riley and T.J. deLyra each finishing with a goal and an assist.

Stevenson never trailed and took a 1-0 lead just 1:04 into the game on a man-up goal by Young.  Goals by Banick at 10:45, Tompkins at 4:23 and Korvin at 2:40 pushed the lead to 4-0 before deLyra scored with eight seconds left in the first quarter to get the Red Dragons on the board.

Ethan Printy pulled the hosts within 4-2 5:45 into the second quarter, before Korvin and Candon scored 31 seconds apart to put Stevenson up 6-2 with 6:45 left before halftime.  The two teams traded the final three goals before the break, and Joey Panariello's tally at 1:55 made it 7-4 at halftime.

The Mustangs scored the first three goals of the third quarter to open up a 10-4 advantage.  Korvin had back-to-back tallies at 5:41 and 3:31 to push the lead to six.  The Red Dragons scored with 2:10 left as Stevenson took a 10-5 lead into the final frame.

D'Onofrio scored just over a minute into the fourth quarter to extend the Mustang lead to six.  SUNY Cortland scored at 12:42 and 9:38 to pull within four, 11-7, where the score would stay until the guests punched in a pair of goals in the final minute, including a man-up goal by Tompkins with 43 seconds left.

Senior Connor Skeen stopped 11 of the 18 shots he faced for Stevenson, while Red Dragon counterpart Joe Scalise had 13 saves as the Mustangs held a 44-28 shot advantage.  Stevenson was 3-4 with the man advantage on the day while killing off all five Cortland extra man opportunities, and the guests held a 33-27 ground ball advantage.  The Red Dragons won 13-of-23 faceoffs.

Defensively, sophomore Lito Flanagan had three caused turnovers for the Mustangs

Stevenson returns to action Friday when it hosts eighth-ranked Cabrini in the opening round of the Greene Turtle Classic at Mustang Stadium.  Faceoff is set for 8:00 pm.
