Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Senior Christian Roberts led three Stevenson University players in double figures with 23 points, but the Mustangs were downed 83-68 by Widener University in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball at Owings Mills Gymnasium Wednesday afternoon. The loss snapped a four-game home win streak for Stevenson.
Roberts totaled 18 of his 23 points after halftime for Stevenson (8-13, 6-6 MAC Commonwealth), going 8-16 from the floor and 5-9 behind the arc. Senior Erik Fisher posted his 10th double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Sean Mayberry notched 11 points. Senior Joe Kiely chipped in with nine points.
Widener (11-11, 6-7 MAC Commonwealth) was led by Sardayah Sambo, who recorded 27 points on 11-15 shooting while grabbing 12 rebounds.
Stevenson opened the second half on a 10-1 run to cut a 14-point Widener halftime lead to five, 44-39, following a Kiely basket at the 17:34 mark. The Pride scored the game's next five points to push the lead to 10, and took a 13 point lead, 57-44, with 13:44 left on a layup by Sambo.
The two teams traded baskets for much of the next 10 minutes, with the Widener lead fluctuating between eight and 11 points. A three-pointer by Roberts with 3:39 left made it a seven-point game, 72-65, but the guests pushed the lead to 10 on a three by Laron Byrd with 3:09 left, and maintained a double-digit cushion the rest of the way.
Stevenson jumped out to an 11-6 lead just over five minutes into the game, before an 8-0 run capped by a Sam Smith layup at the 11:22 mark gave the Pride a 14-11 lead. The Mustangs scored the next four points, and an elbow jumper by senior Julian Davis put the hosts on top 15-14 with 10:31 to go. Leading 21-19, Widener scored 10 straight points to open up a 31-19 lead 4:36 before intermission, and held a 43-29 lead at the break.
Widener shot 65.2% (15-23) over the final 20 minutes and 53.3% for the game while Stevenson shot 45.5% in the second half and 42.6% for the game. The Mustangs did connect on 8-of-16 behind the arc, but went just 8-17 from the free throw line. The Pride, who held a 39-31 rebound advantage, went 14-22 at the charity stripe.
Stevenson closes out its three-game homestand Wednesday night when it entertains Lebanon Valley College in an 8:00 MAC Commonwealth contest at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
