Box Score HARRISONBURG, Va. - Stevenson men's volleyball senior Patrick Schuyler and freshman Landon Shorts combined for 22 of the team's 44 kills as the seventh-ranked Mustangs posted a 29-27, 25-16, 25-16 Continental Volleyball Conference victory at Eastern Mennonite Wednesday evening.
For the fourth time this season, the Mustangs (13-3, 7-0 CVC) hit above .400 as the team finished with a .415 attack percentage. Stevenson, who entered the match ranked fifth in Division III in hitting percentage, has hit over .300 in 11 of its 16 matches.
The first set was tight as neither team led by more than four. The Mustangs had three set points but Scott Brigham had two of his eight kills in the opening set to keep the Royals (7-7, 2-3 CVC) in the set. A kill by Schuyler and an attack error by Eastern Mennonite would give Stevenson a 1-0 lead.
Stevenson jumped out to a 13-7 lead in the second set behind three kills from junior Nate Ellis and two by senior Kyle Pottieger. The Royals scored four of the next five points to get back within three by the Mustangs rallied off 10 of the final 15 points.
The Mustangs hit .640 in the second set as the team totaled 17 kills on 25 attempts with just one error.
Eastern Mennonite rallied late in the third set but could not cut Stevenson's eight-point lead to less than four. The Royals hit -.071 in the final set.
Senior Rob Wingert finished with 33 assists, seven digs, four kills and four block assists. Ellis and Pottieger combined for 12 block assists as the Mustangs totaled 26 total blocks.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, February 27 when the Mustangs travel to Elmira to face the 11th-ranked host Soaring Eagles and Rivier. Opening match is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
